Roomba 530 charging err3

Postby tritin44 » November 3rd, 2016, 6:40 pm

Hello, I recently got a secondhand roomba and whenever I plug in the charger it gives the charging error 3. It's original battery was completely dead, no tone when it was put in, so I bought a new one. The roomba makes a happy tone when it is put in and will clean if I push the button, however it still will not charge the new battery. I checked the voltage on the cord and it was approximately 22.5 V and the battery was reading around 14~V. There was a small amount of corrosion on the contacts but I cleaned those with isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip. The only thing out of the ordinary is the 2 shiny bits at the top of the picture dont match

Did you pull the spring contacts,in the battery well, up a bit?
You should clean the battery corrosion on the spring contact with fine sand paper.

The second photo is not the battery contact.

I pulled on the contacts and still the same result. Another thing I noticed is that err3 happens if I plug in the roomba without a battery

One of the big spring contact in the battery well does not look clean to me.

What is the resistance value between two small terminals on your new battery?

A client of mine purchased a non-iRobot battery with the two small terminals shorted. When I open the battery and discovered that the thermistor leads were shorted together.

The shiny bits are fine. The three pads are soldered and that is important.

No resistance between the thermistor so it's bad?

Yes, that would be bad. You should see a reading around 10 kOhm.

0 ohm = high temperature = thermistor is no good OR the thermistor leads are shorted together
10k ohm = around room temperature

Roomba monitors the battery temperature while charging. It will stop charging when it finds out that the battery is hot.

Alright I will do a return, for reference it is a Powerextra brand battery

Update: I got a replacement battery from the company and I am experiencing the same err3 as before. I was fiddling with the battery while it was plugged in and temporarily got a charging error 2.
I will test the thermistor on this one just to be sure

New Info
I just tested the thermistor on the new battery and they are at 10k at RT. Also the battery voltage is 14-15V so from what I have seen this is a perfectly good battery. I still have the err3 triggering sadly

The no load Roomba battery voltage should be around 16v - 17v.

Charge it again. If you still get 14v-15v, something is wrong with your new battery.

TechGuy-recharged battery and all is well
a1robotrepair- I will look more into that this weekend hopefully
another note-today I plugged it in and the err3 popped up again, but after a few seconds the blinking red light ceased and it was solid green, is this normal during an error or is it good to charge off of?

Final update
I solved the error. It turns out there was a tiny amount of corrosion on the components below the battery terminals. So little it gave a greenish tint I barely noticed but now it's happily charging in the corner

Hi,

I'm having the exact same problem you were. Where on the board or contacts did you clean?

Thanks,

-Matt

I figured it out... another post mentioning taking a toothbrush w/ cleaner to the corroded area and then a heat gun. After I did both, the issue has gone away! I am now the proud owner of a Roomba! :D

I am having a similar problem, but using the lithium Power Inc replacement battery. Everything was working OK until I took apart to clean. I can't do the normal battery reset procedure, as I can't get any power to the Roomba to hold down the spot and dock buttons to do the battery reset. I think the lithium battery might be in sleep mode, but the procedure to wake up is the normal battery reset. It acts like it is charging fine with orange pulsing mode until I get red error and clean light flashing. I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with dock or power supply as I am having the same error on two different dock/power supplies as well as plugged in directly. Any advice to try?
