Dirt Dog and Roomba-500 charger

Postby Aurobo » February 19th, 2012, 11:56 pm

Can anyone confirm if a charger from Roomba 500 could be used to charge the Dirt Dog? I know, the voltage of 5xx is slightly higher (22.5 vs 22v), but I believe it should not be a problem...

I suspect the DD charging system should be robust enough to handle the additional half volt.

Do they share physically the same plug?

Both PSUs have 2.5mm plugs. The 500, 600, & 700 Roomba PSUs will fit the DD jack.

I doubt half a volt is much of a difference but keep in mind the dirt dog has the same failure prone charging system as the other 400 series bots.

Dirt Dog charger and Roomba-530

Postby ewgoforth » September 1st, 2012, 10:33 am

Hello,

Will it work the other way?

My wife purchased a second-hand Roomba 530. I'm getting a Charging Error 5 when I try to charge it up, even when plugging it in directly to the charger plug as opposed to using the docking station. I have a Dirt Dog as well, do you know if the Dirt Dog charger would work? I wonder if the Roomba charger is bad. I'd like to check the no load voltage, but out of my three multitmeters, the two I can find aren't working.

OK, I plugged it into the Dirt Dog charger, for 5 or 10 minutes and it's green. I'm skeptical that it's fully charged though. Is there a way to make it do a deep charge?

You can run the Roomba until the battery indicator changes to Red then continue to run it until it just won't run anymore, then charge the battery.

The clean button/light on my Roomba 530 is solid green I disconnect it from the power and hit the clean button, nothing happens. I don't see any lights come on, no nothing. It's like it's completely dead. My comparison is my old Dirt Dog, but this doesn't seem right. I read the instructions, it sounds like this should work, just like on the Dirt Dog. I also tried the spot and dock button, but it doesn't move and no lights come on when I do that either.

Also, my Dirt Dog's battery is a little tired, but it works. Would it work in the 530? From what I've read about the chargers, I guess it has the same voltage, but less amps.

The batteries use the same sub-c cells but the physical build is different between the DD and the 500 Roomba.

Sounds like it won't go in physically then? It looks like I have to remove the cover to get at the battery. I tried plugging it in, pushing then clean button several times with the same results. This last time the amber clean light is flashing quickly, so I think it's on a 16 hour cycle. I think I'll wait and see.

Hmmm, this time using my Dirt Dog charger with it flashing quickly, so I'm pretty sure it was in the 16 hour charge mode, it charged for maybe 1/2 hour, then gave the charging error 5 message.

Now would be a good time to locate or purchase a digital volt meter so that you can measure battery voltages on those batteries you have. The 500 model Roomba going from a Green status to flashing Red is not a good sign. It would be best to measure the battery voltage to verify it is indeed performing the special 16 hour recovery charging cycle. That special charge is only entered into when the battery is at 9 volts or below. Your 500 Roomba may be trying to tell you something else.

i just received (in the UK) a dirt dog from the US. The charger has a US plug and I don't have a transformer.
Will any 22v or 22.5v uk charger be ok with it? Can it sit on a standard integrated base of the type that charge my 500/600/800s?

this one says it's for dirt dog, but it's 22.5v instead of the US 22v one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/HQRP-Adapter-D ... B078NVHWLM

From what I can gather any 400 series dock or charger will be ok with it as well. Is that right?

Any help gratefully received

ok, they seemed slightly unresolved tbh so I was wondering if the knowledge had solidified in the intervening years.
Was particularly interested in the integrated charger point, but i'll check with irobot.
