That did the trick. There was still a bit of grease slathered in there so I did not even notice there was a seam there.
After taking it completely apart though, I noticed that one of the gears had a couple of broken teeth. I am thinking that this is the more likely cause of failure. Looks like I should have bought the gearbox and not the motor, but live and learn.
