I must admit when I first purchased the Scooba 450 I liked the new design, ease of removing the tank and brush assembly. Now the bad stuff, I don't like that you have to remove a filter behind a plastic plate using a phillips head screwdriver to clean it. I'm sure there are new 450 owners that don't even try to get to the filter to clean it. The other really bad operational headache is that even if you have a really good high capacity battery for the 450 it's of no use to you. You aren't able to perform a second or third cleaning run back to back. Now you are forced into a "charging session" between each and every cleaning session.

I'm going back to my 390 and 5900s and at least enjoy multiple cleaning runs on one battery and no top off charging sessions needed !

The Scooba 450 claims "Light Touch Bumper technology to identify walls and
other obstacles, allowing it to slow down and gently touch the obstacle
with its bumper"

My Roomba 585 has sensors on the bumper that allow it to slow down before striking an object, and it works quite well.

I can not find any sensors on the Scooba 450's bumper that would allow it to see an object before contact, so I am assuming I will hit harder than the Roomba 585. Is this correct?

I haven't disassembled the 450 Scooba yet but I have observed it slowing down when approaching objects just like the 500 through 800 model Roombas.

Here is a portion of the BiTs dump from the micro USB port of the 450. It is the test results of the (smart) front bumper.

factory-test 1

smart-bumper-and-imu-present (IMU=Inertial Measurement Unit)
(imu-ok?) PASS
smart-bumper-wait-startup PASS
not (smart-bumper-ready?) PASS
(baseline-current-ok?) mA -102 min -70 max -270 PASS
(smart-bumper-ready?) PASS
(smart-bumper-current-ok?) mA -46 min -20 max -60 PASS

factory-test 2 bumpers

smart-bumper-calibration L:(427,702), R:(459,698)
smart-bumper-calibrated? PASS

(bump-left?) PASS
(bump-right?) PASS

factory-test 3 cliffs-side-and-front

wiff: lt-bumper-right signal 0 on? 0 (LT=Light Touch)
wiff: lt-bumper-outside-right signal 1 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-middle-right signal 0 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-front-right signal 0 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-front-left signal 1 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-middle-left signal 0 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-outside-left signal 0 on? 0
wiff: lt-bumper-left signal 0 on? 0

Based on this data dump it would appear that there are several sensors installed in the front bumper area.

I just received my Scooba 450 from Amazon. It did have the current firmware, however, It does not have the new yellow filter that you can remove without a screwdriver. Does anyone have a unit with the yellow filter? Should I send this unit back and wait a couple of months for the older inventory to be sold?

It does look like they are starting to roll out an update to the 450 with some improvements.

If you return it I'm not sure you will get the same price on the next one.

Good point, price briefly dropped to $479 and is back to $539. I know you said you were disappointed with the filter screw. I also can't help but think some other minor changes are coming.

after scouring the internet for an unused 450 i finally found one in a tiny electronics store in the north of england!

not cheap, but hopefully will be delivered in the next couple of days, so i'm looking forward to playing with that. irobot are being totally useless at finding a copy of the latest firmware for mac.

anyone still actually use theirs, and likes it?

I have a couple of the 450s. They were supposed to be a great replacement for the earlier 300 models. Other than being able to use the same battery as the 5XX through 9XX Roombas they are not good performers.
