Two Roomba 880s throw error 11s at the same time

Postby koko30 » September 13th, 2015, 11:58 am

Hi, everyone. I have a 6-month old Roomba 880 that has been operating without a hitch. Recently, I purchased a second unit for the upstairs of the house -- it's less than 30 days old. Today, when the Roomba undocked for it's daily clean, it threw an error 11. Resetting the software did not solve the problem. The second unit, unbelievably, did the exact same thing 15 minutes later. Resetting, again, did not solve the problem. No recent power failures/surges.

Any suggestions or comments?

Uh Oh Error 11 is caused when the Roomba does not encounter an obstacle during four cycles of about 18 feet (6 meters) runs. In other words, Roombas do not perform well in large areas.

Hmm. But the errors are occurring -- and the Roombas shutting down -- just inches from the dock as the unit backs out of the docking station. And, both Roombas have been cleaning in their respective areas without a problem until now. In any case, there's not even a slight chance that they are going 6 meters without encountering obstacles.

According to Roomba, error 11 is an internal error. "If Roomba stops and says "Error 11," press and hold the CLEAN button for about 10 seconds until the display reads rSt. This will reset Roomba's software."

I just find it strange that two different Roombas that have been functioning properly until now have become very expensive paperweights on the exact same day. Can I really be that unlucky? Since one is less than 30 days old, I will return it to Amazon, but on a nurse's salary, I can't afford to replace them if there's less than 6 month life span per machine. I think I'd be less disappointed if I didn't love them so much... my house has never looked cleaner on a daily basis.

One other area to check will be the front wheel. Make sure it can spin freely on the wheel shaft and pivot in the wheel well.

Total mistake when researching this 880 error. My apology for leading you down the wrong path with your 880s. First the error I referred to above has to do with the Uh Oh + 11 beeps and not the ERR 11 your 880s are issuing. My question now is when this error occurs what surface is the Roomba running on. If it is thick carpet the over current error 11 is probably due to the two brushes trying to spin but encounter too much resistance from the carpet thus triggering the over current error. Or there is debris build-up on the ends of the cleaning brushes inside the brush deck.

No worries... thanks for trying to help. :)

The brushes feel pretty free-spinning, and I don't think the carpet is the problem. One Roomba only cleans Berber, and the other one is cleaning pretty low-pile, builders grade carpet.

Interestingly enough, I accidentally discovered that both Roombas operate just fine -- dock, undock and run around the room without any errors -- *without* the dust bins in place. My first thought, even though it didn't seem logical to me, is that maybe I had mixed up the dust bins on the two unit and this was causing the problem. No such luck.

So, the units work without the dust bins, but I get an error 11 with them.

Just to see what might be happening when you try running with the dust bins in place, try removing the brushes and running with the dust bins installed.

Nope, same error. I'll see what iRobot has to say today, but I'm not very optimistic that they'll be helpful based on what I'm reading via Google.

For anyone with similar problems, iRobot was very responsive and sent me two new units immediately upon reporting the error 11s. So far, so good, although I'm not feeling good about the overall longevity of my 880s.

I have an 880 that I bought about 15 months ago. Now it is throwing an 11 error, and still does it after reset. I'm told there is nothing I can do, and nothing they can do, it is a software error. So the thing is toast. I will never buy a Roomba again. They don't stand behind their products.

You might consider replacing the CHM. Since it's got 15 months of cleaning time there may be debris build-up adding resistance to the brush motor. BTW, your 880s 12 month warranty has expired and evidently iRobot has decided not to attempt a replacement.

Error 11 is only explained as internal software error, rst required. I would try the Built In Tests first.
Is it a NiMH or Li-ion battery? Next step, try another battery.
