Roomba 650 dragging the base while cleaning

Postby ztm » June 18th, 2017, 8:57 am

Hi everyone,
my Roomba 650 is leaving the base correctly and can return to it upon request, but it always hits and drags the base while cleaning.

I've searched this forum and found out that it apparently has 2 types of sensors (I can't find the topic anymore), lateral ones to guide it to the home base (working) and central one to let him avoid the base while cleaning (apparently dead).

Could you please confirm this? And how can I repair it? Even if there are spare parts (found this, but it is for 5xx viewtopic.php?t=19455), I'm not sure to be able to replace and, overall, I'm not sure if I need to replace something on Roomba or on the home base.

Any help would be much appreciated :D

Go here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2757 and scroll down until you find the "Roomba 500 Service Manual" then read through and perform the procedure to place the Roomba into the Manual Test Mode. One of the tests will be for the RCON sensor (Room Confinement) which is also used to sense the home base avoidance IR emitter located on the top of the home base that generates a low power IR signal that the sensor on top of the Roomba bumper should detect.

I saw that, but I thought it wasn't good for the 650 too. Anyway, the test works fine: I have a virtual wall and Roomba is avoiding it correctly. I forgot to mention this before...
If the sensor is the same, I guess my home base is broken and it's not sending the signal to allow Roomba to avoid it anymore?
In fact tried another test and started Roomba 1m in front of the home base: it crashed directly on it.

Thanks for the additional info. You can now suspect the the home base has an issue.

I have tried setting a VW up to protect the base during cleaning, but the avoiding signal is "stronger" than the docking one, so Roomba is not dragging the home base, but not even able to dock.
Is there anything I can do either than bringing the home base to a service center?

It will be better to just replace your home base. It will cost more to repair it than a replacement would cost.

Yes, I've just seen it's very cheap. I've been lucky it's not the robot to be broken :)
Thanks for your support!

I've noticed that several Roomba devices have problems with the docking station. Roomba 650 is one of them and another device I've had with a similar issue is Roomba 880. There might be more but I haven't interacted with others.

If popular models like Roomba 650 and 880 have a problem like this, looks like it's not something easy to solve. It's quite interesting of newer models like the Roomba 960 and 980 have an issue like this.
