Roomba 980 taking FOREVER to get around entire house

Postby G-Man71 » August 19th, 2017, 1:13 pm

I bought a Roomba 980 about a week ago. So far, I'm happy with it, but after a week of running it every day, it has yet to make it around my entire house. My house is about 2,700 square feet (probably more like 1,600 square feet of floor space). I have been starting it around 6:30 in the morning and by 9 or 10 at night, it still isn't finished. I usually just shut it off because I don't want it running while I'm trying to sleep. I have a lot of carpet in my house, so that probably has something to do with the amount of time that it takes to get around the house, but the total time still seems a little excessive. Is this normal? I have tried changing some of the settings to see if that makes a difference, such as turning of carpet boost and setting it to one cleaning pass. Those seem to have helped a little, but it still hasn't been able to finish. I might try turning off edge clean next. Does anyone have any other suggestions, or is that just the way it is? The Roomba still seems to go over the same areas multiple times, even though I set it to one cleaning pass.

Turning off edge cleaning will help a lot to shorten run times.

2700 sqft is more than your poor little bot can handle in one cleaning.
Sequence of 980 cleaning:
Runs 50 to 80 minutes, depending on settings, 600 to 900 sqft.
Recharges for 90 minutes, 75% battery capacity.
Returns to mission for 35 to 60 minutes...450 to 700 sqft.
Recharges...
Mission...
And so forth.
Options:
Block off 1000 sqft and do those less traveled areas every other day.
Replace battery with Lithium Power Inc 4400. It may finish the entire job by 9 Pm.
Get a 2nd bot for the bedroom areas, like a 650.
I don't let mine in the kitchen or baths, afraid of sucking up water.

Thanks for the tips. My Roomba made it a little farther yesterday and almost got through the entire house. Turning off the edge cleaning does seem to help. I may just try to set up some virtual walls and clean half the house at a time.

Turning off Edge Cleaning and/or Carpet Boost both dramatically increase the cleaning efficiency in terms of the area covered per time. I usually do my daily runs with both turned off, or with Edge Cleaning + no Carpet Boost, and once every few weeks I do a deep cleaning marathon run.

For me it's far more important to get coverage and surface dust out on a regular basis compared to attempting a Carpet Boost deep clean.

Had the same problem but with 2000 sqf. Ok I will be the first roomba owner to admit that the navigation is just not good enough. As soon as it gets dim it goes the same places 5 times and starts going in "roomba" mode. And the high pitched sound the motor makes, does not help if it is going to vaccum for 5 hours and going back 5 times to same places. Just annoyed me and my wife. Furthermore it always slammed into our black furniture. This is not ok for an 900usd machine.
On the positive side I tried the Xiaomi robot as my friend had one. I did not expect much but boy is that a great machine. Navigation is perfect and accurate maps are made of every single chair and teble leg. You can see where your kids left their toys on the live map while it is running it just shames the map irobot provides at the end of cleaning. It does not care if its dark or light in the room and the sonar is detecting every object no matter the color or shape. And yes it is more silent with same suction. Furthermore dust bin is more practical and easy to take out, and it cleans corners better and it is faster. Most important it takes the exact same time every time to clean the house. You can see where it has been on the map and is going and what is left to clean. The monster 5200 battery it has will probably clean 80 % of your whole house on single charge on balaced mode. Try it...

I own both the Xiaomi Mi vacuum, first generation as well as the Roomba 985 I picked up at Costco. The 985 is Costco's version of the 980 which is sold for a less expensive price but only comes with 1 wall barrier.
Overall, I like the Roomba more than my Xiaomi because the Aeroforce Extractors don't get tangled up in pet hair like the main brush on the xiaomi. That said, It takes the Roomba 980 6 hours to vacuum the first floor of my house where it only takes the xiaomi 1.5 hours.
Things I like about the Roomba;
1. The Aeroforce extractors don't get tangled in pet hair like most other brands do.
2. You can actually get support on your unit if it breaks.
3. Larger bin than the Xiaomi.

Things I like about the Xiaomi Mi;
1. Large battery lasts several hours.
2. Laser mapping works just as well in the dark as it does in the light.
3. Sonar proximity sensor.
4. Wall sensor for fast trekking along walls.

If I were home and had to supervise the 6 hours it takes the Roomba to vacuum the first floor of my house, I would probably prefer the Xiaomi. Since I have it set to start after i leave for work and all I have to do is empty the bin when I get home, I prefer the Roomba.

Right now I have my Roomba doing duty on my first floor and the Xiaomi covering my second floor.

I wish I could take the sensors, battery, mapping app and navigation from the Xiaomi and combine it with the Aeroforce extractors and larger bin of the Roomba.

The first time I ran my 980 in my apartment (doing living room, kitchen, bathroom, and hall) it spent well over 3 hours cleaning, doing LOTS of time going back and forth with the Dirt Detect magnifying glass light on and I had to pause it multiple times when the Bin Full light came on. It returned Home once to recharge, then resumed cleaning.

Since that initial cleaning it has never taken more than an hour and 15 minutes to clean the same area and never returned Home to recharge until the job is finished.

I am beginning to add the two bedrooms to its tasks and expect the initial clean time with them included to initially jump dramatically, then decline as it did when I first got it.

Sometimes if I am watching it work it skips some areas without doing them but on later cleanings it does them. This seems to be caused in most cases by my moving nonstationary objects in a room causing it to think there is a barrier in its way preventing access to the area (even though it can get around the moved object with a few more tries).

The first cleaning takes much longer because it is finding the dust a regular vacuum typically doesn't and it is developing its "map", once these have completed the 980 can significantly improve both cleaning speed and optimize its cleaning sequence.

However if you have a very large space to clean doing this in "stages" can help. Block off part of the area until the 980 is doing well in the area it can reach. Then move the block further out to let it do more. Eventually it should be able to find and clean everything (but it still may need multiple returns to Home to recharge for such large areas).

BTW, running the 980 at night is an act of futility unless you have lights on in all rooms it will be cleaning.

The optical tracker becomes lost in the dark and the machine begins wondering randomly and rotating around trying to find "landmarks" to orient on.

I discovered that by accident very early.

One point to reiterate here is that the 900 model Roombas generate a cleaned area map for each and every cleaning session that is completed. The 900 models do not access a map previously generated to utilize for a new cleaning run. A new map is generated each and every time a session is completed.

I use Samsung SmartThings to control most lights in my house, and fortunately I can schedule them to turn on at the same time the Roomba begins cleaning. With IFTTT, I can also have them turn off whenever the Roomba finishes cleaning.

Unfortunately for some people (like me) that system depends on a smartphone app. As I have a tremor that drives touch devices totally nuts, I cannot use a smartphone. So I cannot use anything requiring apps for its operation. I know I am not the only person with this problem.

Although the 980 can be controlled with an app, it can still be operated manually.

Yes, that is a valid criticism. I can obviously use a smart phone, but it bothers me too. I'd find it more convenient to control SmartThings with both a phone and a web interface.

In the mean time, if it's something you're interested in, and if you can get help setting it up, SmartThings can be automated to the point of not needing manual intervention whatsoever. My Roomba runs without any input from me, and all of the lights, etc., are all controlled by voice commands through an Amazon Echo.

I'd really like it if regular computer software or embedded web pages could control such devices.

I have a toothbrush with a progress monitor display that came with it, but the manufacturer discontinued that model and the new model replaces the progress monitor display with a smartphone app. If I had to buy a replacement for the toothbrush I have with a new one it would be much harder to use properly with no display. That could not be used with a computer or web based interface (I am not taking a computer into the bathroom when I brush my teeth)!

So, I was looking at buying a roomba bot for the holiday house I was looking to buy in Greece. Problem, here's said house ; its surface is 1900 square feet. However, it has two floors. Do I just take the robot one day on the first floor and the second day on the ground floor, and so on, or would it cause issues with the maps and pathmaking of the poor thing?

Thanks!

Every 980 Roomba run creates a new map. There is no memory of previous jobs. Two floors, = two jobs, no problem.
