Flashing lights charging roomba?

Postby Lin » October 12th, 2017, 12:08 am

I have a roomba that's been in storage because it needed repaired anyway. I took it out of storage and gave the old battery a shot, it actually charged and turned green. I tested for the problem I knew was going on, but not diagnostics yet. But of course it didn't last and after being off the charger started flashing later. When I put it back on the charger, now both charging lights flash. Take it off and the power is solid, put it on and both flash. Will a new battery solve this or am I better off trashing the bot at this point and not solving my wheel issue?

You will be pleasantly surprised at what has changed with the later models since your R2 4XXX series was discontinued.

Thanks, but that doesn't answer this question. And in fact when I asked what functionality changes there are in newer models I had no replies. I don't have money to buy a new roomba. I may be able to swing a used roomba. But that's if I can fix the one I have already along with my Scooba. If I need a parts bot, getting a second roomba will have to wait. So I'm still trying to figure out what the flashing lights upon charging means. I can't run diagnostics on the current bot without battery. And unfortunately batteries from this series don't appear to be compatible with the newer series.

It appears that your present battery is defective.

Am I correct in that the batteries for new models are not compatible with the 400 series bots? I also need to get a new battery for my Scooba to test that out and see if it's functional now. I was hoping since the battery charged the first time, it would hold out long enough for diagnostics so I know whether or not I need to put money towards fixing the bot or saving up for a new used one off ebay.

The 4XX and 4XXX models as well as the Dirt Dog all use one type of battery. The 5XX through 9XX models as well as the 450 Scooba use another type of battery.

Thanks, your site popped up when I was going a Google search. But I don't have the lights and it was beyond me

I tried plugging the cord directly into the roomba and the power light pulsed red like normal. So I may give that a shot. I think I'll try disassembling it first to clean and check out the wheels, since the left wheel is my problem. And it does seem to have more resistance on the left wheel, which in my other thread said could be a sign something needed replaced in it. Hopefully that's it and not the electronics.

When i buy a battery I can just pop it into the old case too, right? Or would I be required to purchase a new case with the battery? I'm disabled on an extremely low income. It's super hard vacuuming from my wheelchair, and I have 2 service dogs and 2 cats, I need to keep the fur down! I lost my human vacuum ;) so back to the bot. I also need to get my Scooba running too, I had an upright floor scrubber (also a pain to push!) but that's kicked the bucket. And I have more tile in the house I just moved into, so I need the Scooba too. I already had to buy one part that went missing for it, and no doubt a new battery. Again I'm hoping I can get the current battery going long enough to test it though. Before it wasn't sucking up the dirty water, so I hope it was just too dirty and clogged. I've cleaned it best I could but couldn't fully open it, I followed instructions to disassemble but after removing the bumper and instructed screws it just wouldn't open. I didn't want to break anything so I stopped.

Don't quite understand your question. Batteries for your Roomba are already contained within their own case. The enclosed cells of a new battery are encased within a plastic shell. That battery pack installs into the battery well area of your Roomba and snaps into place.
