980 bin in 960?

Postby gspitzmueller » November 18th, 2017, 9:28 pm

Any thoughts on adding the Roomba 980 bin into a Roomba 960? Is it even possible? I’ve had my Roomba 960 for about 5 months now and I’m a little disappointed in the cleaning performance. My old (now broken) Roomba 540 with lighthouse setup seemed to do a better job at picking things up (probably because it did multiple passes over the same area). I’ve tried changing the setting on my 960 to 2 cleaning passes, but I’ve found that takes wayyy to long to be viable in my household.

I’m looking for the 960 to pick up more in one pass, and I’m wondering if the 980 bin could help that. I’m not looking for the carpet/floor sensing in the 980 model, I’m just looking a bit better performance.

Suggestions would be appreciated

Even if the 980 bin would work in the 960 you probably won't see any difference in cleaning ability. As far as I know, no one has tried it. Better to spend your money on an irobot 3.3AH battery, 2 hour run time, or a 4.4AH lithiumpowerinc battery, 3 hour runtime. Either of which will allow you to run 2 passes in large areas.

I just tested this and the answer is: "it kind of works". I posted a more detailed response here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19656&p=148259#p148259

Another impact that will affect a difference in cleaning performance is that the 4XX, 4XXX, 5XX through 7XX models all utilize a brush deck with a bristle brush and a beater brush. The newer 8XX and 9XX models use twin extractors in the brush deck. This difference may impact cleaning performance in some circumstances.

This is why these models make little sense. It'a financial saving at a very large usability cost.

Could you explain a little further? Are you referring to the 8xx and 9xx models?
