Scooba 5900 immediate drying mode

Postby madbulldog » December 29th, 2017, 12:56 am

I have a Scooba 5900 which I just bought used. The machine turns on and puts water on the floor as well as picks it up. However, after running for only a few minutes it goes into drying mode. (Clean button flashing green and blue) After 5 minutes of this it turns off for completion of the cleaning/drying cycle. If I turn it back on it does the exact same thing.

For troubleshooting I have used a known good battery from another scooba and it does the same thing. I have also put a known good tank and brush assembly on the malfunctioning unit with the same results.

I contacted iRobot who stated they believe it is a software update, but this is not available anymore. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this problem? If it is a software update needed, how do you do it? I see a round serial port on the inside of the unit, but I do not have the cable or know how to push the software to the unit from a PC.

There is no way to update via a PC. You need a dongle known as an OSMO. I forget if the 5900 is the scooba that requires a slightly conductive cleaning solution or else it thinks the tank is empty. Try searching the forum.

mfortuna is right. The 5900 requires more than just water to operate correctly. Try adding a cap-full of clear vinegar to the clean tank.

How much vinegar should you add to the tank? I am searching for the exact amount recommended, but no luck.

Use 1/4 cup into a full tank.

So it is working like a charm now. It was a combination of 2 things.

1. Battery had not been used in a while and needed to be run several times to get cycled. By discharging it and recharging it 4 times it was able to run longer. It now runs over an hour on a single charge.

2. Mixture was too lean on vinegar. I upped the vinegar/water ratio and it now runs without going into drying mode until the clean water tank is completely empty. I used vic's ratio of 1/4 cup vinegar per tank.

Thanks everyone!
