Tell me about the Scooba 390

Postby Botty » September 16th, 2018, 10:20 am

Hi all,

I’m about to pick up a barely used Scooba 390 this afternoon. I was looking for a 450 but after reading many threads on here it seems that a lot of you are of the opinion that the 390 gave a much better clean.

The threads I read are a few years old so I wondered if any of you who had owned the 390 and subsequently owned a 450 still held that opinion after having both for a decent length of time?

Quick opinion & summary. The 450 does not perform as well as the 3XX or 5800 Scooba. Steer clear of the 5900 due to vacuum motor bearing design issues as well as you are unable to run the 5900 with just water. Only pro for the 450 is that it uses the same style battery pack as the Roomba models 500 and up. The 390 is a great model to start your mopping efforts with.

Thank you, Vic. I'd love to hear anyone else's experience as well.

Just got back from the pickup. The guy was lovely and for £100 I got a Scooba 350 that looks brand new, a Samsung Navibot that also looks brand new and a bunch of accessories. He's barely used any of them and he thinks he thinks he's got a barely used Scooba 450 at his house in italy if i want it. What a find!

Although the Scooba 390 looks in pretty perfect condition, do you think it's worth picking up a replenish kit?
I discovered that the UK store is still selling loads of Scooba kit even though the section is hidden from all their main menus and their site's search bar brings up a "no results" page

Any goodies you can get for your 3XX Scoobas, grab them. Nice find by the way. Word of caution, don't use the 3XX Scooba juice in your 450 (it you get it) over time that older juice damages the pump and supply tubes. It will actually be better for you to throw away the older Scooba juice and get the newer iRobot Scooba juice in the white bottle.

Thanks Vic, I’ll buy what I can while it’s still out there. Luckily three of the bottles he gave me are the white ones, so I’ll hang on to those for now.

In other news, I just ran the 390 for the first time ever. Did a pretty good job except it didn’t pick up any of the water lol. The dirty tank was bone dry at the end of the cycle.

Could well be that I need to deep clean the internals, or maybe something was aligned slightly off when I put it together. This is the first time I’ve ever so much as seen a Scooba in real life so I’m hoping it’s my ignorance rather than anything more serious. I read a couple of the old threads here from people with that problem and they ended up in discussions about heating the plastics and remodelling the parts. I’m diastaser-prone, so no way I’m doing that.

Your Scooba tank with the clean & dirty reservoirs may need to be soaked with hot soapy water and then with both flaps closed shake the "good grief" out of the tank and then empty them. You should hear a flapper ball rattle when you shake. If you don't hear the flapper, repeat the earlier steps until you do. Then your Scooba should deposit the dirty water into the dirty tank. Possibly fill 1/3 to 1/2 of the tank.

So I gave the whole tank a really good clean - soaked it in warm water and vinegar then blasted warm water through it at a high rate, then ran another clean. There was a fair amount of water left on the floor, about as much as if you hand-mopped and the dirty tank picked up water this time. I emptied out about a cup or two’s worth of the stuff. Does that sound about right? I don’t really have a sense of how wet it should leave the floor or how much dirty water I should expect to come out at the end.

Maybe buying a new tank, cleaning head and squeegees would produce a better result.

That amount of fluid is just a little low. Main improvement may come from a new set of squeegees. In a non-humid home the water left on the floor by a Scooba should dry within 15 minutes.

How do these look to you, Vic?
They’re not particularly rigid, although I don’t know if they’re supposed to be.

Placed an order for new squeegees, a new tank, a new cleaning head and a new filter. Let’s see if that helps.

From your picture it appears that the tube used to gather water to pass on to the dirty tank is missing or damaged. It is inserted from the top directly across from the wire mesh filter. This tube has an opening right where the two squeegees form a V.

Is that the removable little rubber tube? I had the tank removed and also the filter, the tube and the battery etc. Everything out. Is that the tube you’re referring to? This little thing...

just tried a third clean and got a whole tank of dirty water out of it this time.
One thing I realised - In previous cleans I don't think i held the tank at a steep enough angle to fully fill the clean silo with water, hence the low volume output at the end. Once I noticed that I should be holding it at a steeper angle and sloshing it around a bit to make room for new water I got a much better result.

Proper newbie mistake there, but not one that's immediately obvious from any of the advice that i'd read.
