Scoobas & Braavas - Timed Charging

Postby Botty » October 16th, 2018, 11:08 am

I finally sorted out some of my robots and got them their own storage space. In the space i put a wifi powerstrip (this one), with a robot plugged into each socket, like so...

I got this powerstrip because it allows me to schedule each socket on the strip to turn on & off at certain times.

e.g.

I wanted to do this because I didn't want to leave all the robots plugged in 24/7. Apart from anything else, it's a fire risk and I don't want to be burned to death at 4am by a mop. I currently have them set to charge 2 to 3 hours each day, prior to me getting home, so they're ready for use.

So my question is, what's the optimum charging pattern for the respective machines? Is a long charge better? Should you charge right after draining the battery, or can they wait some hours for the charge? etc etc...

I can schedule each machine with its own charging pattern so any guidance gratefully received.

The one thing to remember is that all these robots are active and using battery power whenever a battery is installed. Bottom line would be to wait until robot has completed a cleaning session (let the battery cool down), then run a charging cycle and then disconnect the battery. If the pack is not disconnected then the robot will begin discharging the battery due to automatic active circuits. This discharge is small but continuous and will lead to voltage loss over time.

thanks vic,
I use the robots every couple of days so i thought keeping them topped up with 2 or 3 hours charge per day would be ok. Are you saying you remove all batteries whenever you've charged them, regardless of usage frequency?

I presumed that whatever power trickles away while the batteries are not charging but still connected would be easily made up during the daily charge cycle.

It's very possible that you might be OK with your charging plan.

I'm guessing your intention with part-timing the chargers is to save power? This will probably not happen as when the battery is fully charged, the charger switches off anyway, and every couple of hours just gives a trickle charge (or something like that). I am concerned that what you are doing might even shorten the battery life as having run down a bit during the "off" period, the charger might initiate a proper charge and in total over passing days you may in fact use more power?! Not at all sure about this, but I am fairly convinced that you are not saving anything.

The main couple of reasons I want to do it

1) The Scooba 450 & 390 chargers put out a very loud, high-pitched whine when they're plugged in, which is annoying to be around so I want them to charge when it won't disturb us

2) Apart from the 450, these units aren't new and I'm nervous about the fire risk of relentlessly charging old electrical equipment.
