Roomba 980 - Battery Level in App overstates actual level

Postby internalaudit » January 12th, 2019, 1:50 pm

:?: Over the past few months, when I no longer use my Roomba 980 on a daily basis, I noticed that the battery charge level indicated in my Roomba Android app has been very inaccurate, usually showing 100% and at times, maybe in the high 80's

It will say 100% but after cleaning/running for a few minutes, I get the notification that the battery is too low and the unit has to be charged.

Maybe it's just the battery level indicator in the app that is faulty or maybe the unit itself is thinking it's still fully charged and giving off the false pretense when I check the Roomba app.

The run time is still about an hour and a half if the battery is fully charged so I know the battery is not shot but maybe the unit's battery estimates are just way off until the unit figures out it doesn't have enough juice to run and the charge level drops to 0%. :?:

Is there a way to get a more accurate battery level reading when I check in my Roomba app? I always knew the battery couldn't be at 100% after three days of no usage since the wifi mode is enabled.

If the app indicates the unit is 100% charged, will the dock stop or will it continue to charge the Roomba unit?

Thanks so much.

You can monitor the real time charging status by connecting to the micro USB port and use a terminal software program like Tera Term or similar. Anytime the 980 is sitting on the home base it is automatically connected to the firmware charging system and is continually monitored / charged (24 x 7) until sent on a cleaning run.

Here is a brief capture session to show the charging stats.

Thanks so much Vic. I didn't even know my 980 had a micro usb port.

If I use a smartthings outlet to monitor the electricity draw, will it work just as well?

I really just want to charge the unit (even when it says 100%) so that it gets enough juice to finish the job on the ground floor.

Today, when charging from 0% (went dead while cleaning), it took a little over two hours to charge so I guess if I keep it on the dock for 2.5 hours, it should keep drawing charge until it's really full, correct?

Interesting. I was going to shut down my desktop upstairs and iRobot did respond to a similar inquiry:

The battery status on the App would be a little inaccurate at times, we are currently working on an App update that would be release at the end/mid of February. Once the update is released this would resolve the inaccuracy of the battery status.

The home base continue to charge the battery regardless of how long it's on the home base.
We have a tool to view your Robot's data, this can provide us with an insight of what is happening but first we will need your permission to view this tool. This would allow us to better assist you with determining the root cause of this behavior.
We look forward to hear from you.

One other tidbit of info. When the Roomba is not on its charging base and not on a cleaning mission there are still active circuits inside the Roomba that place a constant and continuous load on the battery. If the Roomba is not placed on the home base the battery will completely discharge in about 3 days.

Thanks again Vic.

I'll be charging the vacuum every two days just to make sure it doesn't go dead.

I have a spare battery anyway for future use.
