Never even tried return to the base.
I suspect battery.

You DID get an error: a "battery dead. Please charge Roomba" error.

However I can't find that error listed in the Troubleshooting chapter of the book.

You might want to contact iRobot Customer Support about that error happening so frequently. I think you could have a defective battery.
