Roomba 980 grinding noise

Postby irrevocable1818 » July 3rd, 2019, 5:17 am

I am a newbie here and I would greatly appreciate your help. I recently bought a Roomba 980 and it has started making strange grinding, rumbling noise. Everything from the side brush to extractors has been thoroughly cleaned. No matter which mode I use, it makes the same grinding noise. It sound as if though wheels are defective. When I speak to Irobot's customer service, they try to convince me that this is normal behavior and not an issue, but I am not buying that. Watch the video here and let me know what you think.

I have had a 980 since the beginning of 2017. It is fantastic.

Your video both sounds and looks normal to me. I hear no "grinding" just the suction motor running (a high pitch "whine"). Going home from a random location is more difficult and can take a few tries (or fail completely). Returning home at the end of cleaning is trivial and typically direct, as the 980 has a map to follow back and drives directly avoiding obstacles. Occasionally it arrives slightly skewed, misses the charging contacts on the first try, and has to back off a couple feet to realign straight to the charging contacts on the Home Base.

Exactly what noise are you calling "grinding"? Is it present throughout the video, or only in parts? I did hear a slight change of tone in the noise your 980 made late in the video, but it still didn't sound like "grinding" to me.

--- edit ---
I still don't hear a "grinding" noise, just the tone changing slightly a few times.

But then I am totally deaf above 3kHz...

I’ll back you on that. I’ve had a 980 before my i7 and s9. None of them made that noise except the s9 which they are now sending my the debris extractor/cleaning head module in hopes of fixing the noise.

The thing is that it did not make that noise in the beginning. I am rest assured that something is defective. Today, Irobot customer service decided to send me a new cleaning head module. I will report back as soon as I have received it.

Seriously though, am I the only one hearing the rumbling noise as soon as the robot starts cleaning the floor? That cannot possibly constitute normal behavior.

Does that noise continue if you remove the extractors from the brush deck? Also that's not a 980 why is it in this thread?

I have not tried that. It definitely is Roomba 980, what do you mean? Check out the video again https://youtu.be/gjFeITuqtcE

My 980 (with boost on) sounds nothing like that on hard floors. Only noise problem I've encountered was with after market rollers. Like Vic said, remove the rollers and see if that might identify the problem.

Thank you all for you invaluable feedback. Guess I was right all along and Irobot's customer service representatives were trying really hard to convince me that this was normal behavior. I stood my ground though and I am hoping that the new cleaning head module will resolve the issue. It cannot be that difficult to install the new module, I guess. Can anyone please confirm that this is a straightforward process?

Simple replacement process. Requires a phillips head screwdriver. There are video guides on the iRobot website.
