Roomber 655 stops with recharge message after 10 minutes

Postby Jibby » July 3rd, 2019, 9:10 pm

My Roomba 655 stops dead after 10 minutes. I hear Charge Roomba audio message. Does the same thing after over night on the charger and green battery indicator. After the last 10 minute run and stop, i pulled the battery. It has 14.57 volts. I already ordered a replacement battery. With that voltage could it be something else? It's always on the charger when not in use. Did the reset too.
Thanks.

Voltage is not a good indicator of battery health. Think of it like your cars fuel tank - over time it gets smaller and smaller. You can fill it quite successfully to the brim, but in the end it will only go a few kays down the road...

Unless something really weird is going on, your new battery will sort it.

That fully charged battery should read between 16 & 17 volts. As Brett mentioned, you have been performing a basic load test on your present battery and all indications of battery run time and stored battery voltage indicate your battery is duff.

All battery types tend to read near full normal voltage when tested using a voltmeter without a load resistor (unless they are hard dead, then they read zero voltage).

However determining the correct load resistor (both resistance AND wattage) for a specific battery is difficult without specs for it from the manufacturer (and the needed wattage may be surprisingly high, which can make buying one expensive).

In other words testing a battery without drawing "appropriate" operating current during the test gives false assurance.

Those little plastic testers for alkaline cells actually test the ability of the battery to supply enough current to heat a tapered load resistor molded into the plastic enough to change the color of liquid crystal material. These are quite good testers, but only valid for the specific alkaline cell each was designed for.

If you're looking at Amazon, I have tried both the PowerExtra and Mr. Batt batteries... the PowerExtra is superior... I get over 2 hours of runtime on mixed flooring (70% hard, 30% carpet.)
