Charger Adjustable Bracing Mod

Postby glnc222 » March 23rd, 2012, 5:12 pm

Adds adjustable bracing for mounting charger on hard floors with common double moldings at the wall base allowing the charger to tip back without additional support. Also for fancier cove base wall moldings with carpet, any situation. Simplest construction, quickly adjustable and removeable.

Long bolts slide freely into the hollow cord wrap pins positioned with hex nuts outside the back to adjust length. Tipped with felt dot for wall paint protection.
Quick release with positioning nuts outside the case -- just pull out bolts; stow inside when unused.
To retain bolts in the back when opening, use a rubber grommet instead of a bare hole in the back, holding screw with slight friction still moveable for adjusting length.

Metric M6 perfect fit (length 60mm, 2.5") or English #12 machine screws slightly loose, fit the hollow cord wrap pins (I.D. 15/64, can be drilled to 1/4; O.D. 3/8). Nylon screws uncommon this size and length, mail order only.

Shown unused is a T-Nut threaded insert eliminating hex nuts, mostly fits but requires unscrewing bolts to open the case or removal (can replace the wrap pins, though, just poking in somewhere). 1/4" clearance inside the cover above the cord wrap pin tops.

1" thin rubber disks available besides felts. Or just use a bit of tape.

For fellow unskilled modifiers:
I'd take care drilling out to 1/4 to use on-hand bolts instead of best size, as bits will dig into the plastic fast and risk wrenching around and breaking off the hollow pin. Sometimes running the drill backwards for a scraping action only works. BIts carve plastic just with hand twisting.

To accurately mark hole position on the back cover: insert a bolt to level top with case edge, then position corner of paper slip at the bolt center and mark outer case edge. Mark the back while installed from the outer case edge. Separately both sides in case not perfectly symmetrical. Using T-Square beware the rubber footing adding to the edge. The inside can be marked by pushing a thumb tack through tape then onto the pin end and closing the case on it. Something will still make this off, and some filing and shifting with a drill required or a wider hole; check alignment with a flashlight; drill a small hole first etc.
Avoid bending pressure on the wrap pins which flex when forced with the bolt, but might weaken at the bottom long term. Slight tension retains the bolt when moving the charger.

Nylon bolts found -- eliminates need for felt pads: neither convenient

Cover marking: because of accidental fit should mention the inside of the cover can be marked with hole positions by sticking a thumb tack on top of the wrap pins and closing the case on it. Just happens to fit so might not be noticed.
