neato xv-21 serial port wifi

Postby undertoe » May 15th, 2014, 3:41 pm

New to the boards, but i am investigating adding wifi webserver to the neato. I know there are a couple threads on the board about it and i was reading through them and i know the serial port is missing on this version. What i did notice on newer XV-11 the pins are missing but the spot where the pins connect are still there. Assuming i could just solder in a connector and get a working serial connection. My question is since i never took my XV-21 apart is this the same case with the board inside there? Any help would be appreciated. THanks!

It will depend upon what main board is installed in your Neato. If it's a rev 113 then it's possible. If you have a rev 64 then you're outta luck.

Here's a couple, the first will be the older rev 113 then the rev 64.

I am assuming the USB port is just a serial to USB adapter so before it I'm just going to try to splice in. Anyone try this yet?

Have you connected to your Neato using the NeatoRobotics driver and a USB-A to mini USB cable yet ? Start with that configuration and then see if you want to try and add a WiFi interface.

In your first picture there are two small patches of white looking tape. If you poke a hole in them you will see two additional screws that must be removed in order to remove the top.

Your the man! Thanks! Any thoughts to my comment above about tracing the USB port back to where it does the serial to usb conversion

Here is TX & RX on the Pin layout. Thing that sucks is my soldering skills aren't that good to get something on there :)

You've done some good sleuthing work on that chip. I haven't tried to trace out the UART leads to the USB termination. Maybe others will chip in here with clues.

Yea bummer is its an ARM chip and its a crap shoot if they actually have that functionality turned on... I think for now i am going to throw it back together. I am gonna start messing around with the spark and see if it can connect it via usb / serial and throw commands at it. If i can figure out how to do that it will make this mod a lot more user friendly, which is originally what i was after.

neato xv-21 serial port wifi

Postby undertoe » May 24th, 2014, 12:29 pm

Oh yea I already have an active thread going. I have a working proto with a ras pi and apache. Works with the clean command but has to reset the PCI bus in order to get the neato to think it's disconnected. However I was thinking with the spark I could do that with a small relay setup triggered by the spark. Would love to make this as easy and user friendly as possible I. The end so others can do it.

The USB to serial conversion is done on the ARM, it has a USB phy built in. Most likely it is in device mode so if you could bridge a USB master to a wifi module you may be able to get it to work.

My beaglebone and raspberry pi both have USB masters. The pi has two so you could plug in a USB to neato cable and a wifi dongle without a USB hub.

Of course you have to write/find software that sends data to/from WIFI and USB.
