Mint 4200 and the cube

Postby kafer1964 » June 20th, 2014, 9:19 am

I have a used 4200 that came with the 4200 and the cube. I bought a power supply for it and charged it yesterday. I put it in the kitchen, turned on the cube and 4200. The Mint would go only about 2 feet, and the cube never did synch up with the Mint. Without a synch, the Mint will scrub or sweep an area of about two feet then shut off. So my question is this, what are the issues with synching that I can try to eliminate? My ceilings are white, maybe 8 feet high, not vaulted. Any ideas?

I have a very similar setup with 8ft white ceilings. I have had issues with the sync indication if the batteries were low in the cube but the robot kept cleaning an entire room. Not sure what would cause the issue.

Do not turn on the cube before starting the mint. The 4200 turns the cube on and off.

Make sure you put the pad on very tight and straight. Most problems with the cube going 2 feet and stopping are caused by the pad not being on tight and flat. (It takes practice)

I didn't turn on the cube and put the cloth on tight. The Mint does not synch up with the cube, the cube blinks and never goes solid. The Mint just stays in a 2-3 foot area, will stop back a bit then go in another direction. It will do this in both modes, the mopping one it does not last long before it gives me the da da da daa, then off.

It is trying to synch with the cube, because it starts blinking when I turn the Mint on and pick a mode.

If there were no cube, what would the Mint do?

I run a 4200 and a 5200 without their associated cubes. They run OK without any issues.

I tried the Mint without the cube. Same symptoms, a foot forward, stop, turn, a few inches forward, stop, back and so forth. Almost like it thinks it is hitting something and has to turn. Can cleaning this thing out inside possibly help?

It couldn't hurt to do a good clean. It may be possible that one of the bump sensors is stuck/broke/defective.

Doe the Mint have a diagnostic check like the Roomba and Scooba?

So far no one has posted any discovery of built in tests for the Braava units.

And be careful with the USB port. Someone, maybe vic7767, connected a mint to a PC and promptly bricked it.

As vic7767 mentioned my 4200 runs fine without the cube so your issue is probably sensor related.

From the manual:

Cleaning without a NorthStar Navigation Cube:
Because the Cube is just one part of the Navigation System, Mint can still clean
without a NorthStar signal present, however the cleaning area will be much smaller and
Mint will not be able to perform edge cleaning in each section.

Well I am no coward I will take this apart and clean and check. It is a shame if this Mint can't be saved, they are pretty cool.

Mike answered this question but here's another answer. The cleaning pads that are used to collect debris from the floor are trapped in the pad fibers. If there is sand or grit or hard particles collected into the fibers then there is a possibility of scratching the surface the unit is running over.

thanks a lot! so no problem on marble then I just have to look and pick up small things that might get stuck to pad and scratch the marble floor.

mop and scrub mode works great right? this guy said it doesn't work well and he just uses sweep mode. but for sweep I got roomba and that would defeat the purpose of mint if you don't use mop and scrub

how's this compared to irobot braaza? I think braaza are 300 and up $. for 140 I think I might give this one a try, amazon gave it a lot of good reviews. how long do you guys use it until it got problems how do you guys like it?

possible to cut your own micro fiber towel instead of buying pads for the 4200? then just wash and reuse the towel.

The Braavas are just renamed Mints.

The pads that come with the Mint are washable and work great.

I read that you should keep it charged all the time, do you guys do that? that will make the battery lasts longer or something?

ok tried it the first time and it went dead after 1 hour and half. Cleaned up the footprints so I guess it cleaned the floor pretty decently. Maybe I will run it once more time on the same surface to see if it will be cleaner. I think you still need to manually use mop once awhile huh? this can't replace manual mop and deep cleaning.

I actually cut up micro fiber auto rug from costco and used it for mopping, once awhile I would pause it and change it out. micro fiber actually looked a lot dirtier than the mopping cloth it provided. I was impressed that if you pause it it will still remember the map and continue where it left off.

the quick clean mode where it doesn't spend that much time around furnitures and corners, I think that's the more useful mode? battery won't drain faster. I think once awhile use the normal mode to get the corners, furnitures and around the walls. but mostly use it the quick mode I think 2 hours of mopping ain't enough for my house.

also I have berber carpet, sometimes it will go over the carpet and get stuck there, I guess berber carpet is just too short for it to sense it.

when it hits the wall the lights will blink, that means it's remembering the wall right? and when you un-pause it it will have one light first, then after it find the northstar thing it will go back to 3 solid light right? manual didn't say anyting about those.

also the charger plug it didn't come with any cover, what if water from the pad gets into it and damages it? it's like 1/3 inch away, pretty bad design and water will damage it instantly I think. it's also a prime spot to collect dirt if you are using the dry mode, it's right there!!! anyone reported damages from that I wonder what's a good solution to prevent water and dirt etc.

The situation you describe of the Mint traveling a couple of feet and reversing is consistent with what mine did. Look at the wheels and see if any string/yarn is wrapped around the axle area. That is what caused my similar problem. Open up the wheel area and clean it out. It will, of course, void your warranty if you still have one.

Hey Kazy I actually purchased another Mint and after among sure it worked, I used its battery in my first Mint and PO and behold it swept the entire floor. So I bought a new battery and it sweeps like new. So it looks like I will sell this Mint and keep Mint #2.

I figured this out. With a solution pad and with a Swiffer wet cleaning pad on my Mint, it could not push the load and thinks it is stuck, or running into things. When I put the regular cloth on just the dry pad it works fine.

One question, does the Braava's work well with the wet pad and wet cloths? I have a chance to buy a used one.
