Roomba 530 Scheduling - Need... Newbie... Help!

Postby scooter2407 » July 23rd, 2009, 9:51 am

Hey guys,

Long time reader of the site, and I have a question that made me finally need to register.

So I'm a total newbie with actual Roomba hacking. My job starts at 6am, so I can't exactly turn it on before I leave at 5:30. I also have zero knowledge of "hacking" a roomba.

I just want to set my Roomba to begin cleaning at noon every day. Here's what I did so far, based on information gathered from this forum:

1. I bought this serial cable wire
2. I downloaded this pdf called iRobot_Roomba_500_Open_Interface_Spec.pdf
3. I downloaded the "Roomba Schedule program"
4. ???

So I have no idea where to go from here. I don't know how to send codes to the Roomba like some other threads show. Would it at all be possible for someone to post a few easier step-by-step ways to schedule the 530 to operate at a specific time of day? Thanks a lot guys.

Steps:
Unzip, install and run Roomba status.
Go to the Menu/Settings Window and set the proper com port and baudrate (115200,n,8,1) and click serial port.
Connect to the roomba by clicking on the Connect button.
Click on the Start Button
Now you can enter the schedule commands in the text box to the left of the send button. Enter the proper commands and schedule data seperated by commas.

I don't have a 500 and have not downloaded a schedule. Hopefully this post will get you most of the way there.

There are three commands that must be sent to the Roomba so that a scheduled mission will execute.

Send this command to activate the interface: 128

Now you have to set the system clock. As an example, today is Friday and I'm typing this response at 10:50 AM so to set the clock the following command is sent.

168, 5, 10, 50

If the time you want to put into the Roomba is after 12 Noon you will need to use military time. Ex. To tell the Roomba it is One in the afternoon you would send : 168,5 13, 00

To send a schedule to the Roomba so that it will execute every day at Noon send this command:

167, 127, 12,00,12,00,12,00,12,00,12,00,12,00,12,00

Thanks vic and fortuna, I'm close, but I not there yet. Here's what I've been trying to do so far:

1. I connect the Roomba via serial cable
2. I open Roomba Status v1.4.
3. I click on "connect"
4. The roomba does a little dance (while twisting the wire. It's weird). Eventually shuts off.
5. I click on the text box and type "128" and click send.
6. Nothing happens.

Here's the thing: I can click "clean" and it'll start moving. So I know I'm connected. I tried clicking on settings, and it doesn't let me select the option for a serial port. That seems to be grayed out. Only clickable/editable fields are for web server settings.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm almost tempted at this point to videotape what I'm doing and upload it to youtube...

When you first start Roomba Status, before doing anything else, move your mouse curser up to the left hand top of the display and select "Menu" , then "settings", when that opens you will be able to define your com port and parameters "115200,N,8,1",as well as whether you are using a cable or Rootooth. Once you've defined that information then select "OK". At that point you can then select "Connect" from the bottom left of the main screen.

OK, I did that. I selected Com 1, 115,200,N,8,1

Then I selected Connect. All sorts of blinking lights and icons flashed.

I typed "128" and hit SEND. Nothing happened.

I tried 168,3,12,30 and nothing happened.

Am I still missing something so basic? Sorry I'm such a noob, but thanks a lot for your help so far.

I find you need to click the power/on (I don't remember what it is labeled) button which is near the arrow keys in the drive panel. If you don't commands don't get sent.

Hello!

I know this threads are quite old now. But I was wondering if they still work?
I would like to schedule my new bought roomba 620, is it still possible? What kind of cable do I need for that -the link does not work any more-, this one maybe... ?

Thank you very much!

That cable is good for what you want to do. It is the upgraded Create II cable that is used on the 650 Create. Does your 620 have charging contacts underneath ?

Hey!

Thank you for your quick reply!

Yes my roomba has charging plates underneath, so everything should work.
But now I noticed that this cable is not available in Europe/Belgium -.-
do you have an idea where I could buy an other (similiar) one?

Thank you so much

You might consider building your own solution using a WiFi to serial module, 7 pin mini din connector, 3.3 volt regulator and misc wire, switch, and LED similar to this picture.

There is no pat number that I can see of the antenna. It is included with the WiFi module. Which I now have learned is no longer being sold. We will have to find a new source.
