Roomba "Blackbox"

Postby bhylak » April 25th, 2011, 10:45 pm

Gazing through the 500 series Service Manual I came across this...
ROOMBA BLACK BOX
Every Roomba has a black box that is an onboard data logging processor. This processor is not erased when the robot is reset. This data may be valuable if one wants to know the total cleaning time in the robot’s life (mission runtime) or how long it has been charging on the Home base (total-hours-on- dock)
To access the black box Information you will need the serial port cable between the robot and computer and the software called “R3blackboxreader.exe”
1. Connect the serial port cable to Com 1. If battery is low, have the power supply connected to Roomba.
2. Run the “R3blackboxreader.exe” 3. Select “Black Box” tab and press “Check” 4. Press Copy 5. Open a separate Excel sheet and paste the data.

That sounds awesome! Does anyone have a copy of that software?

Yeah, Irobot does. I think there would be legal trouble if that program leaked.

Its a servicing manual, is it for people who are authorized servicing people? Has any one developed a program that can take advantage of that black box?

I don't think so. It is a proprietary program and I don't think Irobot will share it with the public.

There is no known OSMO program available to the public. Some people may have the OSMO Hacker or even a non-returned iRobot OSMO unit but no programs.

You will need another cable to convert TTL to RS232 to connect from a PC to the Roomba. There is a USB cable on the iRobot site for the Create robot that will work on all the Roomba models with an SCI port.
