Hacking a 780... is it possible yet.

Postby gangel » August 16th, 2011, 11:16 am

Hi pplz as above subject:

I jsut bought a roomba 780. I was hoping to hack it/play with a few things as ive seen pplz do on here (eg. make it sing etc) nothing THAT important!!.

Can this be done yet (eg with that hacking manual that you can buy) or is that all still just for the 5xx since the 7xx are so new?

Cheers :)

The Hacking Roomba book is geared towards the 4XXX model Roomba. If you can locate the 500 Series Open Interface document there are some commands that will work on the 7XX Roomba models. Just use some caution, I was able to turn a 760 into a nice doorstop. It was during the warranty period and iRobot was nice enough to ship me a replacement 760.

I think you would be OK if you stuck to commands in the SCI spec. As I recall vic7767 was trying some undocumented commands when he bricked his roomba.

lol, Mike is right. If you stick to the OI commands there are a lot of things you can make your robot do without fear of breaking it.

The 780 SCI port is located under the handle. It is sealed from dust by a small rubber lip. You will need the 500 Open Interface .pdf if you can find it. It will be a little more up to date than the one you found.

Hi

Has anyone figured out the SCI to the 700 series yet?! I have a 780 roomba and trying to figure this out. If I understand this post correct it seems like the open interface is not the same for the 500 and 700 series? Has anyone asked Irobot to figure this out? I have tried to contact irobot myself now and waiting for an answer, if i get any info i will post it here....

I want to be able to control the roomba remotly why I need the full interface...

Thanks
krst

You can use the commands published in the 500 Roomba open interface document to control the 700 model Roombas. You can also use wireless hardware like the Rootooth or EZ-B to remotely control your 780.

Oki, I am trying to use turtlebot with ROS to make a self navigation roobot out of my vacuum cleaner :-) But I am not really sure yet that the 700 and 500 sci is really completly the same as i get error messages when I run 500 sci code why I am unsure....
