There is hope for firmware upgrades or hacks as a well hidden micro USB port revealed.

WiFi equipped robots update firmware over WiFi in other brands. USB just backup, or repair the WiFi.

Is it normal that the xiaomi doesnt know how to get back to the charging station, unless he started his cleaning process from the base?

Can someone confirm that this robot doesn't have problems with glass objects or objects coated with chromium because of the sonar? Does it have a better navigation system compared to the Botvac Connected for example? Really interested in this one but all the reviews seem to be about the vacuum in general and not that much about the navigation.

For me the most important thing is that it avoids bumping into objects and after that comes its cleaning capabilities.

Can you share the taobao link?

Also how much shipping cost to your country?

I have been digging taobao for the xiamo vacuum cleaner, but no luck. Could you please share the link. Also, what is the price you got from them? Looks like fasttech charges USD 48 for shipping to the US, which comes for more than what gearbest offers.

Note U.S. Square Trade extended warranties are not available on customer imported products compared to dealer sales in-country. Square Trade is not much active outside the U.S., maybe some places in Canada. It's a matter of servicing devices for U.S. power plugs, and any U.S. regulations including insurance business. Best service contracts are from Best Buy and Walmart.

Youtube "big mess" test shows a lot of fine material not picked up on hard floor. No comparison available with other brands, on the exact same material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX1EBlLdnFs
(skip to around 10 min to see results)
Could be that material is somewhat sticky, who knows? Roomba 880 - 980 does have a different type of brush roll claimed to do better on such floors, with special aerodynamic engineering. Others all have a similar ordinary brush.
Dyson has more powerful suction, for whatever that is worth (besides shorter run time).

Postby heavytrevy » October 15th, 2016, 10:30 pm

Ive had my Mi vac for 2 weeks now and I can report it is vastly superior to my Neato XV 21.
Not as loud even on its highest power level the side brush works well and the real time mapping is pretty sweet,
I got mine from Gearbest when it was first available.

I can tell that Xiaomi has done alot of work with the mapping compared to the XV21.

Trev

What details of the mapping have been improved? Do you see any effect of the ultrasound sensor?

The Neato bumps into things a lot harder were the Mi vac is gentle .also the Mi vac can stay very close to any object
but the neato will veer off slightly.

The mi vac is also alot faster on the floor and its turns are quicker as well.

Maneuvering improvements could make a good subject for a Youtube video, though a lot of work. Go viral...

My XV-11's habit of veering away too far after a brushing against a slight protrusion on a wall annoys me. Since it's been following the wall with its wall sensor, it'd be nice to see it continue to use it by backing up, correcting just slightly and trying again.

The XV's LIDAR's probably not 'seeing' enough detail of the slight obstruction to be useful, but the bumper and the wall sensor inputs could at least be utilised a little better. Considering the XVs don't have a side brush, I'd rather a better clean than a slightly faster one.

However, I'm not sure about the Mi's speed across the floor being a good thing. With robot vacuums, a little slower is arguably better. But I'd still like one ... if it spoke English. Come to think of it, I'd prefer a Neato-like beep. Or R2D2's
#1 Neato XV-11 SW 2.0 Board Rev 113 / 4400mAh Lithium Power battery installed Jan 2018 / Pet & Allergy pack installed Sept 2013. In July 2014, received and repaired a faulty #2 Neato XV-11, running Lithium Power 4400mAh battery since July 2015

Anyone who has one of these could do a test of reflective surfaces by wrapping aluminum foil around a chair leg etc.
I made a model this way of problem bar stool pedestals affecting Neato's.
Distribution is still limited so not many owners yet and even fewer with problem reflective surfaces.

Better software could help besides sonar. When a robot bumps an unseen obstacle they could map the area by touch, but they don't seem to do such sophisticated procedures. Neato's do a better job with mag strip barriers, systematically probing and mapping. So they know how to that in general, but oddly limit the application.

The worst case is getting trapped on reflective things which do not trip the bumpers. That is where the sonar should make the most difference. These cases are even more rare than other shiny things.

So I urge robot fans to make tests with kitchen foil.

There seems to be more distribution now in Europe with owners on Roboter-Forum and Kelrobot.fr/forum.

It would also be really nice to know what happens with table legs and such that are below the LIDAR height.
