Lovely; where's the order form?. Reminiscent of famous MixMaster. Tops Samsung's 9000. Chinese saying, may our emperor live 10,000 years... Irony, a slave to master the floor. Mystical associations: masters of the mysteries (perfect for a Dan Brown novel; a truly initiated robot, black belt -- a third degree initiate; cleans the whole temple). Comics: Masters of the Universe. Now trademark it before competitors grab it.

Haha,

Yes, very 80's I agree. Cheers was for the ideas just the same. It's appreciated.

I tend to let first release models go, so I hope djos and third_deg don't mind if I hang around until the Floormaster 10001 is released ... the one that brings me coffee
#1 Neato XV-11 SW 2.0 Board Rev 113 / 3500mAh battery pack installed May 2013 / Pet & Allergy pack installed Sept 2013. In July 2014, received and repaired a faulty #2 Neato XV-11, running Lithium Power 4400mAh battery since July 2015

Perhaps some combination of the following will help...

Product Line: Transition; Transition 3D
Model: Transit SC17a -- (Stair attachment, Combo brush, Model 17a)

('Dimension' could also work; Model: Dimension 17a-SC)

These are possibly a bit utilitarian, and not unique - but descriptive.

'Cherry 2000' would get my vote!

I have a fairly sizable robot fleet already but I'm sure I could "arrange" for a significant enough failure in one of them to justify selling it off as spare parts to help fund a new acquisition! :D

As a former iRobot guy I should probably avoid "i" names.

Although any of those are better than the earliest iRobot names and logo.

Indeed, even Apple have stopped prefixing new products with the letter "i".

"FloorMaster" is not distinctively robotic, could just as well be another regular vacuum, might confuse shoppers.
It could be a model name but not a product name. You could name a company after yourself, but that has proved a problem with some famous serial entrepreneurs, not reusable. They didn't use "General Electric" for nothing. My submissions in PM, something with "auto" or "robo", "bot" already taken. Create the potential generic for the category, in Sun-Tzu style (though who would think in Britain vacuuming is called "Hoovering" -- though that was at the dawn of household appliances a century ago, all complicated now). Hopefully "auto" would not be confused with cars.

True. Sounds very similar to the Thigh Master by Suzanne Somers. :handgestures-thumbup:

Thanks for all the info, third_deg. Sounds like exciting times.

Also, now I have a pretty good image of this new robot in my head: a six-wheeled mini-lunar rover that climbs up your legs and uses a tangle-free hair turbine brush to clean your thighs. Brilliant!

As for the name, I concur with your assessment that "3rd Degree" isn't consumer-friendly (though it's kind of cool). The value of the name "Roomba" is huge, what a perfect name. You should take this naming very seriously — either engage a branding firm, or if you're on a shoe-string do an internal exercise to determine the adjectives that describe it and the emotional connection you want customers to have with it. The name should be comfortable as a literal household name, a helper people would invite into their homes. But perhaps you embrace the technology aspect of it, and bend more that way. Depends on your brand image.

My company does a little bit of branding, but it's not our core. We're a tech shop who does some branding to support building custom websites and apps, our real skillset. I assume you already have a partner, but if not I could point you to some agencies I respect.

Also, the modularity thing sounds pretty cool. Though I sometimes about the trade-offs associated with it — like that modular Motorola Ara phone that at first sounded like a good idea, but ended up being a disaster that could never launch (and if it had, would have been a commercial failure).

What remains to be seen are any improvements in navigation software. It seems strange to me how all these robots act stupid in tight spaces and seem to rely on very low level procedures which are insufficient. They cannot seem to recognize they are spinning around endlessly getting nowhere. They should record and process their short term motions for paths and at least recognize positioning changes over short periods. Where's the watchdog timer? In the worst case one of these damaged the wheels running endlessly trapped under a dishwasher door. Give me a break.

So mechanical innovation is welcome but software expertise is another matter and hard to find or expensive. More people is not the solution. There is a creative element to it. Some people specially gifted with details and math, machine language programming and what not, cannot see larger pictures or new methods. Gifted project managers might help, but are often routine book keepers. The most talented are likely already taken by the major firms who can outbid.

One of the consequences of Smartphone app controls is it seems to open up the software to more hacking (user improvements...), given the Xiaomi robot activity; the smartphone can be hacked separately from inaccessible robot internals.

One of the reasons I came up with FloorMaster was that imo a product name should give you a clue as to its purpose.

One of the best names ever for a product was from IBM, back in the 70's and 80's small computers were called microcomputers, after IBM released the IBM PC, almost overnight microcomputers became known as "personal computers". That was all due to marketing a great descriptive name.

Automation is the purpose, not cleaning. Other products are available for the latter. Not a personal cleaner, but one with personality. Voice activation getting popular, so put in some responses: "get out of the way you big oaf, I'm workin' here." "don't you dare pull that plug while I'm charging".

Automation is a means to an end, clean floors are the purpose.
