New Green CHM

The iRobot store is selling the Cleaning Head Module again! :D This time it is green. Anyone know what the specs are on this one and whether is has sealed bearings?

Very interesting. . . I am hoping it houses sealed bearings. That will (Almost) fix all of the issues of the CHM. Hopefully it houses 3 sealed bearings, and revised their brushes so it doesn't get hot and melt.

One can hope.

Info from swiss roombaforum:

New at the green CHM:

** More rigid design of gearbox cover
** Moved position of gearbox cover screws (better sealing effect)
** Introduced washers on some (not all) gearbox-shafts (for better shielding the shafts against dirt)
** foam plastic ring on the motor drive shaft (as known from black CHM)
?? possibly returned to a no-ball-bearing-design (as known from red CHM) (not 100% confirmed) ??

mastercb wrote:** More rigid design of gearbox cover

Uh, the original gearbox cover was sturdy enough.

mastercb wrote:** Moved position of gearbox screws (better sealing effect)

That's not where the pet hair is entering..

mastercb wrote:** Introduced washers on some (not all) gearbox-shafts (for better shielding the shafts against dirt)

Against dirt? Uh, dirt isn't penetrating into the gearbox. Pet hair is.

mastercb wrote:** foam plastic ring on the motor drive shaft (as known from black CHM)

Yea, nothing improved there..

iRobot 'thinks' they know what is causing the issue.. Seriously iRobot!! Make it mandatory to have your engineers come over here and read what is causing the CHM issues. Quit Guessing!!!

You are correct I have just received a new GREEN cleaning head (uk). I had ordered a black one but they are obviously not supplying them any more. The unit is as described. there are 6 screws in slightly different positions instead of the original seven. No bearings they have gone back to using the gear casing as a bearing so unless the plastic is considerably stronger and heat resistant it will wear just as the red CHM's did. In fact the only other difference to the red/blue CHM is the washer around the driveshaft between the motor and the gearcasing.
The brushes now green are the same as the blue set supplied with later red/blue CHM. Back to discs and ripping the hair off the end with a seam ripper - sigh.
I can only suppose that the engineers do not take these fellow home and actually use them and maintain them personally or they would revised their opinions about what is or is not effective.
So I am now looking forward to continuing with the monthly degunge in an attempt to get the longest life from the gearbox.
It is SO FRUSTRATING.

It seems that Vic will be staying busy modding the CHM's with his sealed bearings.

Thanks for the vote Chris. I have ordered one of the Green CHMs so that I can determine how it may be improved.

Irobot must have done a poor job of testing the bearing equipped CHM. Once it was clear the shielded bearings were not going to improve the rate of warranty returns, they scrapped the bearings because of the extra cost.

It's too bad they are not improving the 500 series. A lot of people will probably make it to the end of warranty and then have a non functioning bot.

500 series owners should report CHM problem 2 weeks before their warranty runs out. At lease, they have a spare CHM to last them 3 - 6 months after the warranty runs out.

But in the long run, Roomba owners should do the bearing mod themselves.

What a ride. When I saw the topic I started to get excited. Oh well...

Guess it would be wise to get the black CHM before they run out at this point.

I too received a replacement CHM. This one is green replacing a black that replaced a red one. I too, can't believe, they have now removed the sealed bearings and essentially returned to the original red one, with the yellow removable sleeves. One design change leads to another failure somewhere else, so they abandon the sealed bearing fix, rather than solve the design flaw of the black brushes at the yellow bushing end. How can they stay in business with engineering so inept?

I would guess it hasn't been in the engineer's hands for a while. The bean counters have now taken over.

Just an FYI, Irobot didn't use sealed bearings but opted for cheaper shielded bearings.

So has anyone figured out if it still has the same problems as the red one? Or the black one?
Or did they actually find some way to make it work better?

It seems stupid to go to a worse product, without at least some improvements. Although, the money consideration does change things.

If they changed something to keep hair from getting into the gearbox the green CHM may be an improvement but long term the lack of bearings means wear to the gear/case mating surface.

I received the Green CHM from IRobot today, installed it into a 510 and ran it in MAX mode for 90 minutes. Disassembled the CHM, inspected the gear assembly. Things were nice and clean inside after this one run.

More tests will be executed in the next few days and more extreme environments cleaned.

As Mike has mentioned, with no bearings in place on the new Green CHM there will be wear on the plastic surfaces and shims or bearings will be required down the road.

Thanks vic for checking this out. If it at least keeps the hair out that would help tons. Glad you can test this for us.

Thanks for your time Vic.

When performing the next test and disassembly CHM green, could you provide some pictures?

Thanks again

Vic,
Thanks for the picture. From the picture, there is no grease on the gears. Does it have a very thin layer of grease?
