Roomba 550 won't dock

Postby kviri » October 19th, 2009, 5:25 pm

I'm at my wit's end on this one...

I left my Roomba 550 off of its home base for several weeks (I went on vacation, and forgot about it for a while before and after that), to the point where the battery would no longer accept a charge. Oops. So, I ordered a new battery. Now, the Roomba will accept and hold a charge if I plug the charger cable directly into it -- but if I try to dock the unit, it doesn't work. It goes up to the dock and does the back-and-forth motion like it's trying to make proper contact with the home base, but the base's "docked" light never illuminates and eventually it gives up. (Actually, I saw it flicker on, exactly once for less than a second, and I haven't been able to get even that far along again.)

I've cleaned the contacts on both the Roomba (which is only about 6 months old) and the home base, and I even went so far as to buy a new 500-series home base -- nothing has made any difference. It's as though the contacts on the front of the Roomba are completely "dead".

Is there anything else I can try?

There is a reported issue with some model 5XX Roombas that suffer from a open connection on the charger input jack. There is a printed circuit board that the 3 contact 2.5 mm power jack is soldered into. Check that there is continuity between pins 2 and 3 on the board. Normally with no power plug inserted pins 2 and 3 should be shorted together. With the jack exposed so that it can be viewed from above after the Roomba shell has been lifted out of the way the pins needed to test will be on each end with one lead being brown(2) the other black(3). The center pin(1) lead is red.

If the Roomba is only 6 months old, contact iRobot. It is under warranty unless it was a refurb.! Call customer service and let them know when and where you purchased. Ebay is the wrong answer and will void the warranty - hopefully you bought it from a recognized dealer! If it came from Costco, just take it in for an exchange for a new system! They have your info in their system.

to iRobot: Explain the problem and they will probably have you send in the bare bones Roomba and the charging base and charger for replacement. It's not too expensive and you won't have to get mechanical.

Vic7767,
Are you saying that the open connection issue is a problem some people have with new Roombas? My 532 will not charge on the home base either, but that was not always true. I started having problems intermittently, and now will only charge on the jack.

No, it's not just a new Roomba issue. It seems to occur on the 500 models a lot whether they are new or have been used a while like yours.

Yes, you could replace the charging jack on the side of the Roomba. You can find the part on ebay.

I swapped the jack out from my spare parts roomba and that did the trick. Thanks Ed.
