Roomba 530 Circles to the Right

Postby Smorkus » November 7th, 2009, 7:02 pm

Hello. First time poster, new Roomba owner.

My 1 month old Roomba 530 has developed a problem where it circles only to the right. It appears to me that the right wheel is not turning. I have been using iRobots's online support but their proposed solutions have started to repeat themselves.

This morning my Roomba got stuck in one place and appears to have run for quite some time trying to extract itself because of the depths of the wheel marks. (It had gotten wedged under one of those springy door stops that sticks out of the baseboard.) Since then it only goes in circles.

I have cleaned out the wheel wells using compressed air, turned the wheels by hand, pumped them in and out by hand - all to no effect. I have tapped the bumper and tried to clear it with compressed air. I have held down DOCK and SPOT to reset it. I have cleaned the nose wheel. I have cleaned both brush and roller. I have cleaned the dust bin. All to no effect.

Now when I run it, the Roomba circles to the right in the same spot. It sometimes temporarily speeds up. It sometimes backs up. But it keeps circling. When it's done, it makes the bad sound and then 11 beeps which indicates the bumper.

Any ideas? This thing is only a month old. Thanks in advance.

Try placing the Roomba into the Demo mode and see if it will run straight.

At 1 month old - is it not under warranty? If so, have irobot replace it! Bumper issues this early are not a good sign and you may have them continuously! I actually think the circling to the right sounds like a bad wheel sensor if it goes forward in circles. Bumper sensors tend to send the roomba into back circles...

vic & ric

I pressed demo and the Roomba only circled to the right during the entire show. (I'm fairly certain that the right wheel is not spinning.)

Yes, it's still under warranty which is why I'm pursuing a solution thru iRobot, but so far they've just been saying "do this" and "try that" and haven't offered to replace it (yet).

Thanks for your replies.

Smorkus, it will be best to do as you have planned and keep after iRobot to provide you with a warranty replacement Roomba. You can see what is involved in troubleshooting a drive motor by going to the "How Do I" section of my website.

Have you tried doing a software reset?

Yes, using the spot and dock button is one way to reset the Roomba. Another is to remove the battery and press the Start button for 10 seconds. Either method seems to work. There is a third method but it involves sending the command "7" using the SCI port.

Try getting on the phone with irobot. This way when they tell you one of their canned answers - you can tell them did that, already tried that, etc... I've had much better results and much QUICKER results when I don't spend a week emailing back and forth. Good Luck!

Good news. iRobot is sending me a replacement right wheel module. Hopefully it'll arrive today and it'll fix the problem. I'll let you know. Thanks for all the advice.

The new right wheel module has been received and installed. Tests on two small rooms indicate that the problem is fixed; the Roomba doesn't go in circles anymore.

hello,

i'm new around were. I have the same problem about the right wheel stop working.
I disassemble the wheel and tested the motor with 9 volt battery like vic7767 said (http://vic7767.com/how-do-i/), it runs in two directions. Do you know what could be the problem?

thanks for your help

It's possible that a component on your PCB has failed. If the drive motor works using a test battery then the H bridge on the circuit board may have a defect.
