Which Roomba do I have?

Postby nmesseng » June 11th, 2010, 8:25 pm

Hi all -

Just became a member a couple of minutes ago. Purchased my first Roomba from Overstock.com last week and it arrived today. From their website it is a "iRobot Roomba 560 Vacuum with Home Base (Refurbished)." It also lists the following on the overstock.com website:

Vacuum cleaner includes:
One (1) iRobot Roomba 560
Two (2) Virtual Wall Lighthouses (each requires two C batteries, not included)
One (1) self-charging home base
One (1) power supply (3-hour charge time)
One (1) extra filter

I placed the important text in bold and underscored it. Anyway, I think you know how this story ends. I open the box and the Roomba has 2 auto virtual walls instead of the lighthouses.

Without opening any of the plastic wrap, I looked for a model number on the underside of the Roomba. It has been smuged out. Either sanded away or the factory used a hot instrument to remove the model number.

I bought from overstock b/c I wanted the lighthouse technology and they have a good warranty. I have a 1200 sq ft 3 bedroom home with an odd floor plan, and I am afraid that the little guy won't make it all the way through the house and back to the charging station. I am worried he would become lost and die of thirst.

I called overstock and informed them of the problem (their suppliers are not shipping what their website is advertising). Overstock.com's customer service people were very friendly and opened a ticket. They said they will get back to me in 2 business days.

While I wait for a call back, I have a few questions:

1. I assume I have a refurbished model 561 since it came with auto virtual walls, right? There is no chance I got a 560 that is lighthouse capable right?

2. Assuming overstock .com allows me to return the item, which is the least expensive model with lighthouse technology that I can get?

Thanks for a great forum everyone,
Keith

PS - I will update everyone on my experience with overstock.com as info becomes available.

Pull out the dustbin and look for the serial number sticker inside. The first five digits are the SKU, the first three are the model number.

This is not really a refurb but iRobot now has a 560 model without the RF module for Lighthouse control. Scheduling is still intact but the RF board has been removed from the PCB. If you are handy with tools you can open up your 560 and replace the PCB with an earlier 560 PCB that has the RF module. The board can be found on ebay with seller "casino187" and it sells for about $80 plus shipping.

Thanks for the help. I would have looked more at the Roomba, but overstock.com's customer service told me to leave the Roomba in the sealed bag until they investigated my complaint a bit more.

Thanks for the help vic7767. I might just perform surgery on the bot and sell the other PCB, especially if they send me the vitrual lighthouses as listed on their website. Although I assume that this would most definitely void my warranty. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks again,
Keith

Your not voiding a warranty until they find out. Chances are, they won't.

Hi,

I'm very interested to hear where you are with this. The same exact thing happened to me with newegg last week and I'm currently fighting with customer support to get them to understand the problem- description of product states the remanufactured model should support the lighthouse technology and ship with 2 lighthouses. Instead I got 2 virtual walls.

I called iRobot and they told me to check out the serial number to find out if I got a 560 or 561. Mine starts with PRR560 which would indicate my model does support lighthouses, so I'm not sure I understand why I got 2 virtual walls with it.

Unfortunately newegg is telling me they don't guarantee the accessories in a remanufactured product, only the item itself.

I love the 560 so far, but without the lighthouses it doesn't seem to want to move beyond contact range with the home base which prevents it from hitting the other 1/2 of my house.

thanks,
chad

I did the same thing. The order from newegg came today w/ the virtual wall, not lighthouse. I checked the spec on their website, it says:

Each Virtual Wall Lighthouse (2 included) confines Roomba to one room until the entire floor is vacuumed before Roomba moves on to the next room.

So even if it's recertified, they can not say they can not guarantee what the accessories it comes with since this is what they advertise on their website, right?
I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out.

I called newegg this morning. The customer support was not very helpful. She said I can either exchange it or return for a refund. For an exchange, there is no guarantee that I'll get the right part since they stock them in the same place. She suggested I call irobot to see if they could exchange the virtual walls for the lighthouses. So I did. I got a very nice CSP who confirmed that with my serial number, I should get the lighthouses and not the virtual walls. He said he will send out the lighthouses and I can keep the virtual walls. So I am happy with that. Can't wait to get started. Now I think I need to get extended warranty. Does anyone know where I should get them? Thanks.

Extended warranty??? Besides squaretrade, I never heard of one.

As far as I know, the best way to get an extended warranty for the Roomba is to either get a squaretrade warranty when you first purchase it, purchase it with a credit card that automatically doubles the warranty up to an additional year (All Amex cards offer double warranty, as do many other cards.) or of course, buying from Hammacher, where you will get a lifetime guarantee included.

Check the read me first sticky topic for a link to the service manual. Then you can run diagnostics and find out exactly what is wrong with the roomba.
