Roomba Clean Button & Dock Issues

Postby kiniki » June 13th, 2010, 4:56 pm

Hi

Just had the roomba run over some thin sticks and beads...

It docked, but now the "charging" light on the docking station does not come on even though the roomba is docked. I plugged the charger directly, which charged the unit till it was flashing green, but when I press clean, it does nothing.

I have reset the unit and also removed and replaced the battery. But still, no charging light on the dock and pressing Clean does nothing.

Any ideas?

It's a 530 model

A fully charged battery indication will be a steady green Clean LED not a flashing one. Keep the power supply directly connected to the Roomba until the flashing stops. Even then you might want to continue leaving the power supply connected and let the battery receive a trickle charge for a few additional hours before attempting a cleaning mission.

How old is the battery that is in the 530?

I'm not sure. I bought the 530 secondhand. I was getting a good 45 minutes out of it before it died...

I left it unplugged overnight and it was still steady green and doing nothing when "Clean" was pressed... (Holding Dock & Spot does work to reset the unit, so those buttons are working)

I'm concerned that some of the beads it picked up did something to it. They were pinging around when I found it...

No... I gave it it's full charge then unplugged it.. and left it over night...

No particular reason other than I thought it was pointless keeping it charging when it was already fully charged...

Anyone have an idea what might actually be wrong with it?

Your battery is just worn out. Also when the power supply is unplugged and the Roomba is just sitting doing nothing, there is an electronic IR remote control monitor system active inside the Roomba that uses battery power and will discharge the battery over time.

So is that why when the Roomba is on the dock with the contacts aligned, the charging light on the dock doesn't come on? The battery not feeding back the info?

I find it at big confusing how it will allow me to reset with the dock & spot buttons, but the clean button does nothing. I thought even with a worn out battery, it would try to do something!

You are possibly fighting two different issues here. One would be a duff battery the other would be a duff homebase.

Oh dear

Considering I bought it second hand for £70 (from someone who I believe had no idea of the value of it!) it looks like it's going to cost more to fix it than I paid for it!

You could try running diagnostics (there is a pointer to the service manual in the read me first sticky). To get into diags the clean button has to work. If you can't get into diags then it could mean your clean button is not working.

I think it's not working... I tried taking it apart.. but once I got down to taking the black plastic cover for the battery and saw springs for the wheels and stuff, I backed off and put it back together... I am not very handy at all!

What happens when you press spot? Does the roomba attempt to clean?

No... Does nothing

But if I hold Spot and Dock, it does reset... So I know both the buttons are working... at least to reset it

Try pulling the battery out and putting it back in. Just in case the button reset is not reseting all of the roomba.

Again, it appears that your battery is shot. Also your homebase appears to be defective since the charge led won't come on while the Roomba is docked but the Clean led flashes and goes steady when the power supply is plugged directly into the Roomba. Another consideration is that the homebase is OK but the charging jack on the side of the Roomba is broken. There is a normally closed contact that may be defective and be open instead of closed when the power plug of the charger is not inserted into the side of the Roomba.

Ok Vic, looks like I'm gonna need to get my hands dirtier, are there any guides to opening up that particular part of the roomba? Or is my first step to look for replacement parts?
