Tragic Death..

Postby roombafan56001 » March 11th, 2011, 4:49 pm

Today, one of my robots died. It was an iRobot Roomba 535. I set it to clean mode and off it went in its merry little way. It cleaned my whole room just like a good robot. Then near its end, it started to act funny. I lookedd like the whole from bumper was "numb". It didn't reall respond to when it hit something, although it backed up and turned around after a second of pushing. I thought nothing of it.. maybe it just messed up a process or something.

About a minute later I left to check email. After finishing all of the sudden I heard this VERY loud crashing noise sevral times as if something kept falling. I ran into my room. The roomba was gone!! I did not hear it at all. Then, out of the corner of my ear I hear "uh-oh!". My heart sank really low as I knew where the sound had came from..

Then, moments later I slowly walked down the hallway to my right. I approached the staircase to my basement. It the bottom (and all of the steps) lay a damaged, broken Roomba! :( :(

As I walked down the dirt covered stairs, I saw it bin, snapped up. The bumper was a few feet down. The sensors were dangling by the wires.. And the rest of the unit was laying upside down on the basement floor, dead. I flipped it over, and luckiy the batter did not fall out and the light was still on. I pressed clean, and heard no beep at all. then the brushes tried to rotate, but failed. It never stopped. It strted to smoke and flame. I turned it off, and threw it in a box in the closet. Rip roomba 535 2010 - 2011

I think your Roomba went backward down the stairs. I have a sunken family room. I had witnessed that my Roomba went backward a few times into the sunken family room.

I'm sorry that your robot is failed :(

Ps. omg!! why all you people always tell that your robot 'died'? It sounds like it will be a human...weird...it's not funny :| Much better word is 'is broken', 'failed' or sth like this :)

"uh-oh"...I saw this in manual for Roombas - it is strange to me too (just like "died", "death", etc.). Even IRobot invent such a bizarre determination for scooba/roomba state  ...better for me is telling that someones Roomba/Scooba makes (no "says", as it is not human! ) "beep" or is "failed/broken" - it should reminds us that it is a robot=machine=artificial intelligence (not biological organism!). Let's be honets!

Ps. BTW...ok I can agree and understand as it could be some cultural issues between some lands (US-Europe-Asia-...), then it's understandable for me that you treat your robot like a 'pet' :)

In the land of UNIX there are terms like, Parent and Child Processes and when you hear "Kill a child or parent process" it's not personal but just programming verbage.

EDIT: I understand what you mean vic, but can't understand why you people bring that up from a fantasy life (machines "life") to a real life :shifty:
