Roomba 400 Battery Dead?

Postby mapleleafs89 » April 21st, 2011, 4:00 pm

I bought this roomba red for my parents for Christmas, they loved it instantly.

So the roomba is 5 months old, the battery is practically dead. Last month it lasted 20 minutes they say, today even less. Sometimes it goes out and instantly returns to the dock they say.

I bought the dock on kijiji, I think its meant for the series up because it has a bit of trouble sometimes with its swivel wheel getting up it. So I have no idea whats at fault here?

Is it the dock, the dock charger, the roomba, or a lemon battery?

edit: I tried for myself, the roomba was green, came out of the dock, went red, turned around and went back into the dock. I plugged it directly into the charger now and it went to a solid green.

edit2: I tried the battery in another roomba (remanufactured roomba discovery, white), and plugged the charger in and the power button is now blinking red... Does that mean that my brand new roomba is dead? Whats the warranty policy with these things, I dont have my receipt anymore and I live in Canada.

Can't answer your warranty question. Check with where you purchased it, also did you register it with iRobot?

It's probably suffering from the famous U2, U4 MOSFET failure. Do a search on this forum for "U2 MOSFET" and have a read.

Charge it externally using TechGuy's method. (Look in the wiki)

Im charging the white one now on the dock, its been going for 6 hours and is still red?

I bought the roomba from some warehouse sale, they had hundreds that sold in a couple months. They come every fall but are gone now.

If the white one still isnt charging with the battery what can I do..

No I didnt register it, I have no idea how. Hopefully I didnt waste 200+ bucks on a piece of junk

So the battery that was in the Red is now in the White and is not charging?

To register your Roomba just go to the iRobot website.

Yes it wasn't charging in my new red one (5 month old) battery gradually went from 1+ hour vacuum time to 5 seconds before it returns to dock.

I put it in the white roomba now, same charger and it glows red (doesnt go green instant like in red roomba). But its been glowing for 9 hours now. I checked right now and its orange, I cant remember if it was red when it started or orange like it is now. In any case it wouldnt take 9 hours to charge anyways right?

Maybe if the battery was really depleted... Looks like both of them have a U2/u4 issue... Do you have another battery to test? Do you have a voltmeter?

U2/U4 require a replacement of two chips on the main board (The U2, and the U4 mosfets) Not too difficult.

When I woke up, the light on the white roomba was green! I pressed clean and the colour change to red and it made a low pitched beep..

These things are a piece of crap.

So you guys are saying its the roombas fault? I dont have a voltemeter or whatever and no spare battery, Ive got 2 roombas with 2 chargers and a docking station.

What exactly is the issue, is it the battery is just dead. Is the battery dead because of the roomba? If I buy a new battery will it die too because of the roomba?

They used the roomba 2-3 times per week, so maybe thats too much? I heard the battery was supposed to last 1-2 years. Is this covered by roomba warranty/do I need a receipt to do a warranty repair.

Look at the wiki for techguy's charging procedure using the external power supply. If the batteries hold a charge then it could be the U2/U4 issue. If you run diags you don't need a meter. There are tests that determine if there is an issue with charginging current. See the service manual.

The bad thing about the 400 series is the battery being dead can kill the roomba's U2/U4 transistors. This makes the battery even more dead. Putting the dead battery into a working roomba could kill U2 or U4. It's like a virus.

I think theres still a good chance that the battery is dead... Go to Radioshack and pick up a 10 dollar multimeter, or run diagnostics.

Its not worth my effort fixing it, I'd spend hours trying to figure things out. Can't believe 2 out of 2 would have the same issue, hopefully they will fix it for free.

Once a bad battery is installed into the 4XX or 4XXX models there is almost a 100% chance that the charging system will be damaged.

Well its still under warranty, so why wouldnt they replace it for free?

And concerning the bad battery... If they send me a new roomba, I install old battery, it dies...

If they send me new battery, and it was the roomba, roomba kills the battery...

I can't win!

Also, lets say they do send me a new roomba, what should I do with the dock I bought? Is it now prone to damaging the roomba? What about the actual chargers?

If your robot is under warranty then iRobot will replace it. The homebase is probably alright and can't damage anything anyway. The power supply is also probably OK and a simple check with a voltmeter can verify that there is 22 volts dc at the charging jack.

The Roomba won't kill a battery but if the charging system is damaged then the battery cannot be charged and the onboard IR signal monitor system that is always on will slowly discharge a good battery.

Well if they send me a new one I want to keep the battery for a backup, how can I determine if the battery is good or it is bad?

Also, where should I say I bought it from to avoid any problems.

I am in Canada so I dont know what the authorized dealers are here. I already registered for retail store (guess I should have done gift).

Is http://www.ncix.com a valid retailer?

As mentioned before read techguy's procedure on the wiki. You can use the roomba's power supply to charge the battery.

Okay I am super confused now.

I got my parents to drop it off at my place so I could take a look at it some more, I plugged it into the fast charger overnight, it was red and in the morning it was green. I pressed clean and it ran, then I plugged the base in after it was going. About 40 min into the run under my bed it stopped. I heard a little tune, 4 beeps of different lengths. I have no idea what it means! The battery was on yellow before it stopped and played this tune and went red, no way it could be the battery right?

What could it be?

edit: I took the battery out, then put it back in. Pressed clean and it went from green to red and stopped in 10 seconds? battery should last for over 1 hour I think, not 40 min.

Shouldnt it slowly go to orange then red and search for a base before stopping and playing the 4 note tone, sounds like it is dieing when it plays the tune. Is it because it went from 1+ hour to 10 seconds run time that maybe it will take a few uses to get back up to 1 hour or what?

the 4 beeps means the battery died. You have a bad battery. The battery was going down hill so fast, it might not have had enough time to dock. if it was u2-u4, it wouldn't be able to recharge. If you put a dead battery back in, its not going to have any more power...
