While there are already several Robotic Lawnmowers on the market today, they are all priced well above $1,000, and have not yet penetrated the consumer market. iRobot is known to be working on their own Robot Lawnmower, but it looks like a new company called RoboLabs just may beat them to market.
Robolabs is scheduled to launch the SmartMow Series 1 Robotic Lawnmower this Spring at a cost of only $749.
According to the site, the SmartMow works by using a perimeter wire to define the cutting area similar to that of an invisible dog fence. SmartMow starts off in a circular pattern trying to detect the perimeter wire, and then follows this wire back to the base station before mowing the rest of the yard.
The SmartMow will be the first robot lawn mower sold in the US, by an American Company, and costs less than $1,000. At the time of this writing, people can pre-order the SmartMow by paying a $175 deposit on the $749 purchase price at SmartMow.com.
Compared to current production Robotic Lawnmowers, the SmartMow does not appear to be very rugged or durable, but we won't know for sure how it actually performs until it launches.
Here is a video of the SmartMow in action.
