Army Sponsors Project for Malnourished-Looking BEAR

Even if it's just an acronym, I wish they could have come up with a more appropriate name.

BEAR stands for Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot, and while it doesn't resemble a bear in any way (looks more like a cheetah, if you ask me), this machine justifies the meaning of its acronym quite perfectly.

The robot's designed to augment humans in search and rescue operations. Its agility and upper body strength as well as resistance to nuclear, biological, and chemical agents allow it to perform feats that would be extremely risky if carried out by its human counterparts.

When soldiers get seriously injured behind enemy lines or when survivors get trapped under a precarious rubble, sending in humans tend to put more lives in grave danger. With a robot, you can bring down that risk substantially.

Currently, BEAR can lift 500-lb weights, wears explosion and fire-resistant treads and batteries, and has 22 degrees of freedom.

Vecna Robotics, the machine's manufacturer, is being funded by the US Army's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC).

Here's a suggestion: How about changing the name to CHEETAH (Computerized Help for Extraction in Every Terrain Army Humanoid) instead? or LEOPARD (you supply the meaning yourself).

This BEAR doesn't look anywhere as cuddly as its real-life counterparts, but we've recently featured one that's every bit of a teddy bear
