With an experimental cap put in place by underwater robots showing no signs of leakage, it looks like the Gulf of Mexico can breathe again once more.
About a week ago, we shared here how robots were activating a crucial process to seal the BP oil well. That procedure was aimed at putting a temporary cap tight enough to stop any more oil from leaking into the gulf. Well, the period of testing the temporary cap is now about to draw to a close and there are still no signs of new oil leaking out.
Initially, BP officials wanted to observe the cap only until Saturday. Despite getting positive results, they decided to extend the observation period for one more day just to make sure. If there are still no leaks within the extended observation period, BP will move to the next step - pouring cement over the well to kill it for good.
Regardless of the outcome of this test, one thing is certain: the BP engineers couldn’t have gotten this far this soon without the aid of underwater robots.
