In 2023, when I learned that Neato was being shut down, and soon after their cloud services became unreachable for a few days, I arranged to return the two Neato D8's that I had previously bought for myself and my mom (the latter also turned out to be defective) from Amazon and purchased two Roomba i7's instead (model i7156, both units being shortly used Warehouse Deals). I always considered iRobot kinda legendary and above what I was willing to pay, but the price of i7 was comparable to that of D8, the reviews were pretty good, and i7 seemed like something above entry level, nearly top-of-the-line, so, I thought, it would be a great purchase.

Now, after a little over two years of using it, I must say that I'm feeling quite let down by my i7 in particular, and Roomba in general, to the extent where I actually want to replace it with something that would specifically not be a Roomba. Here's why:

First, what annoys me the most is that way– waaay – too often the vacuum fails to properly connect to its charging base after doing its work. I blame the charging contacts for that, which, compared to the Neato models I previously had, look stupidly small. Yes, cleaning these contacts helps. For a while. But if I get to do that every week or two, is that still reasonable??? To me, it just seems very stupid. I mean, did Neato hold a patent on longer charging plates or something? Why is nobody else making charging contacts like that, but everyone is doing these tiny little pins instead? By the way, I don't think I've ever heard the robot warning me about failed connection to a charging base. At best, it plays some chimes which indicate nothing to me, except that perhaps I should check out the app. But that shouldn't be the only way to solve issues like this!

Second biggest annoyance. I have a daily vacuum job scheduled in the app, but even when the robot manages to charge properly, sometimes it won't start. Instead, when the time to clean comes, it will loudly announce that its dust bin must be emptied (so it can be informative after all?). But even if do so right away, that scheduled job is now lost for today and if I still want the robot to clean the house today, I get to go to the app to trigger the job manually. I find this logic extremely stupid: why can't the robot warn me about its dust bin being full after completing a job? Or an hour before starting a new one? Or at least restart that job if I clean the bin within a given time frame after I'm warned? Why does it have to wait for the next scheduled job, only tell me then, and quietly fail that job as a side-effect? (Ahh, correction: I just found a setting in the app that allows me to tell the robot to keep cleaning even if it detects that the dust bin is full. I've switched it over and will see how that works).

Other pain points are less severe, but still:
  • Somehow the spot cleaning function is very messed up. In addition, it can't be triggered via the app.
  • The area around the base also seems to never be cleaned.
  • It looks like the area map gets slightly distorted (rotated) over time, meaning that the robot will not clean immediately next to some walls and no-go zones, but might end up violating some other no-go zones.
  • Seemingly inefficient cleaning of certain spaces: we have a small foyer, which could be cleaned by going two or three times along its length, but the robot always goes perpendicular to its length for some reason, resulting in many more turns and, likely, poorer cleaning.

Irobot lost their way a long time ago, and their products reflect that. They will probably declare bankruptcy in January. All their debt is now owned by their Chinese contract manufacturer.

Matic is the only robot vacuum/mop I have been considering. My scooba from 2007 finally became unrepairable, so I ordered a Matic recently. I am looking forward to having a well made modern robot vacuum that has amazing support. Quality of software is the biggest issue with most brands. Matic has one model and is constantly improving and updating software - similar to Tesla.]]>

I never heard of Matic till now, but looking at their website, that one model costs $1245, which is way more than what I'm comfortable paying. For a price like that, the robot would have to be perfect and work for years to come, or at least powered by open-source software, but I really doubt I could expect any of that.]]>

Ironically, iRobot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on the same day, although it seems they have a buyer for their IP.

With this, I suppose I won't rant about Roombas anymore.

But if you do have a Roomba, you might want to at least pull and back up its BLID and password used by the cloud services to communicate with it, so that at least you can control it remotely should they eventually shut down their cloud services like Neato did earlier this year. There's a project on GitHub that will help with that, and might even help you control it remotely regardless of iRobot Cloud's status.]]>

Dear undersigned,

I am still amazed by the longevity this petition is showing. Yesterday, 52 new signatures came in - which is one of the best days since start of the petition more than two months ago!
As long as this rate keeps, I am hopeful to get something rolling with this petition.

Yet, it is still only a petition. Vorwerk can decide to ignore it, if reputation is irrelevant to them. Thus I am happy that there are other creative and diligent people who also find ways to fight the situation that Vorwerk has created. Today I would like to show two of them.

Please be aware: I am not affiliated to any of the two and do not take ownership. I can not be held responsible for what these people do.

1- Reddit user shaman79 (www.reddit.com/user/shaman79/) claims to prepare a class action lawsuit. You can find all information on Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/NeatoRobotics/comments ... ted_users/ - including information on how to take part.
(Disclaimer: I do not know this user and can not be held responsible for this user's activity, especially for the data collection of that user as part of the process)
2- Reddit user Aggravating_Gur_4710 (www.reddit.com/user/Aggravating_Gur_4710/) haS created a way to connect your bricked Neato Botvac to Home Assistant (an Open Source smart home solution, see www.home-assistant.io/) in order to revive it.
It includes setting up an ESP32 (a micro computer on a single chip for development) and connecting it to the Neato's ports. You can find all the information on GitHub: github.com/philip2809/neato-connected - and they also provide a chat server on Discord for helping out: discord.gg/PAgwhWvyD8
(Again, I can not be held responsible for their approach or damages possibly done by that.)

I am amazed, especially by this last approach: This can really solve the issue, even if all legal ways might fail.

Let's keep all the efforts going - and please keep spreading the word of the petition. I hope to be able to get some traction via press/media - therefor more signatures are needed.]]>

Here what I did:
Open Toolio
Click Serial/Settings
Click on Auto detect Neato
Select COM3 (in my case)
Click on Serial Connect

Now the robot should be connected

Next:

Click Debug/Terminal
In the Command field, type:
testmode off
testmode on
newbattery

Then you should see the message: NEWBATTERYNew battery inserted.

For me if I try anything else, it would reboot the robot every time (I think when a command from the UI would try to do TestMode ON)

If I do it manually, in the terminal then TestMode ON works for some reason. Odd, but it works and then you can type the NewBattery command/

I hope this works for others too. Please reply if it does.

Cheers]]>

Thanks!

I asked this question because the website doesn't look much like a review website anymore, but looks more like a collection of affiliate links to buy a robot vacuum instead, so I thought maybe some robot-selling business bought the website and is now using it as an ad stand of sorts.

For example, sorting vacuum list by "Highest rating" seems to do nothing useful, as robots with and without ratings, as well as with and without "Expert scores", are just listed in a seemingly random order. Also, there's no custom filtering functionality (e.g. by price or by features) other than the two predefined filters. I don't see any meaningful reviews either. It's just confusing and outright sus.

For example, the very first robot in the list on the home page is Roomba j9+, which boasts an "expert score" of 9.5. However, when I visit its page and click on the "Read review" link next to that score, all I get is the product description. The only reviews on that page are the unstructured ones at the bottom, which give an average rating of 4 stars out of 5. Yet, this rating is not even indicated anywhere on the front page.

I'm looking for a vacuum to replace my Roomba i7 with, but, um, it almost looks like I'd be better off reading customer reviews for specific robots on Amazon than expect honest in-depth enthusiast reviews here anymore. :(]]>

If I were the sole editor here, and didn't have time to maintain the website, and someone with the "Most Active Forum Mod" badge came up to me to offer their help, at least I'd be more than happy.]]>

But, if you're still willing to keep improving it and are okay with accepting external help, you might want to build a list of things that need to be done and share it (here or elsewhere). Also helpful would be to see what vision you have for the website, if any.

I could probably help with migrating old articles, if this was one of the items in the list. Perhaps also review the robots shown on the front page (right now one of these "robots" is actually a multicooker :D). Maybe something else too, like programming, although I'm reluctant to formally commit to anything because I know myself well enough and am aware that my enthusiasm often doesn't last.]]>

Importing old sections was on the list, but the old system was an older version of drupal and the new system is on wordpress. I originally had a lot of custom hacky code linking the drupal and wordpress databases which made it very hard to upgrade the old site.

I actually need to migrate the site again to a more stable host so I'm going to look into it further this weekend and see what else needs to be done.

I really do appreciate the help!]]>

This weekend is already over for me, but feel free to ping me should you want any help with migration. You should be able to see my email since you're the admin here anyway. :)
Although I don't really hold WordPress in high regard. Its hooks-based code, database structure, "everything is a post" pattern, and the prevalence of freemium plugins with constant annoying reminders to upgade make the experience of using or working with it quite sour.]]>

With the plugins I'm currently using, it does have the ability to allow site members to add any robot through a front facing web interface, which was part of the plan do that even if I weren't around most things could be done by the members.

I'll send you a message tomorrow afternoon. If anyone else would like to help please message me as well.]]>

I would also suggest using the ALTCHA Spam Protection plugin (v1, not v2!) for submissions by users who aren't logged in.

As for filtering, I can't answer that, and without knowing what the stack in use is, I wouldn't even know what to look for.

How did you decide to migrate to WP in the first place? Was Drupal too troublesome to maintain?]]>

Drupal was great, it was a really powerful backend. I don't know if it's different know but originally each major version upgrade required a ton of work if you had any custom code at all. I chose wordpress specifically because it's so well supported and custom code can be separated into a theme or a plugin but working around the limitations of wordpress is challenging.

The plugins I have right now mostly work fine, it's honestly just filling in all the robots and specifications that I got overwhelmed with. I did try to fill them in automatically from places like Amazon, but I never perfected the process hence why there's a multicooker in there!

I'm going to try to go over it over the next few days to see what else really needs work.]]>
