It may be possible to disable the switch by wiring its contacts closed or open however it is when bin installed -- detection will be disabled reading permanently installed. Check it with a continuity tester or volt meter.

HIgher end Android phones also include a Hot Spot function. These are useful in some hospitals or institutions with less than full indoor WiFi coverage.

Sounds like some voltage regulator supplying that resistor may have failed, over-loading it, but not an engineer. Extremely old model, not made for decades use.
