Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
I have been fine with my roomba for over two years now. But something else is needed to complete the vacuum requirements of a house. I don't want to buy a full size upright or canister as I don't think I need that. So I am looking at small vacs to get the job done. In your experience what is the best portable small vac to get? Here are some requirements I want this vac to fulfill:
-clean crevices and corners alongside the walls. (after two years the dust roomba is unable to get can be seen along the edges).
-clean places other than the floor, such as the couch and kitty tower.
-use to vacuum out the car.
-as much suction power as possible!
The ones I have found that look good so far are these:
Black & Decker Pivot Vac 18V Cordless Pivoting Hand Vac, PHV1810 - This one seems to fulfill all my desires. The only negative is that it uses a ni-cad and I have read reports that it will lose a lot of power down the road because of that.
Hoover BH50030 LINX Pet Cordless Hand Vacuum - This one seems really nice. It has a li-ion battery but I am having trouble finding ANY reviews on it or people who have run any actual tests with it. It is also really expensive.
Black & Decker FHV1200 Flex Vac Cordless Ultra-Compact Vacuum Cleaner - This one seems like it would be easier to use in the car with tight spaces but it seems a liggle clunky for other jobs. I'm also not sure how suction power compares to the dustbuster.
So, what are your thoughts? Help me decide.

main bot: neato xv-15 (Europe xv-11)
to sell (one day): roomba sage and silver (both 400's)

Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
I think it is too expensive for a handheld vacuum that might not even be as good as the ones I listed. This video at least shows that the DC16 wasn't as good:sageman wrote:what about dyson

The DC31 is probably better but I doubt it is $300 better than the others.
Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
Yes, it has bigger dustbin, better battery pack (longer cleaning time/better performance) and higher suction plus "Max" mode (increased suction).Xamindar wrote:The DC31 is probably better but I doubt it is $300 better than the others.
What about Electrolux Ergorapido? http://www.amazon.com/Electrolux-EL1009 ... 21&sr=1-25

Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
Thanks piokrza, I'll take a look at that one.
Also, A couple more uses for a hand vac would be to clean the dust out of my computers and the clothes dryer. Too bad these battery powered ones don't seem to ever come with a small hose attachment.

I convert my upright Kirby into a portable handheld vac for cleaning the car, computer keyboard and innards.
Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
Lol, those guys knocked on my door this past Friday offering a "free carpet shampoo to help spread the word". After two and a half hours of showing me the Kirby and still no shampoo I had to kick them out or I would miss an appointment.vic7767 wrote:I convert my upright Kirby into a portable handheld vac for cleaning the car, computer keyboard and innards.

You let them stay and babble about free carpet shampoo for 2 HOURS??? I wouldn't let them stay for 10 minutes unless they brought booze lolXamindar wrote:Lol, those guys knocked on my door this past Friday offering a "free carpet shampoo to help spread the word". Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
It took as a while to find a great portable vac. We went through a couple of models.
A really good one is the Eureka Hand-Held Vacuum.
- Very powerful (dual engine)
- durable filter. can be easily removed
- very light
- affordable price
- good reviews

Black & Decker Dustbuster chv1510. There are several similar units form B&D but this specific one has the basic stuff and the price is very good. It is rated well in the reviews:

and I tried several hand vacs in a store and I'm pretty sure it has the best suction. Note that I didn't try Dyson but it's way too expensive.
And Dustbuster is cordless, too.

Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
Unless for loose dust on a hard surface battery powered handvacs lack the power to produce a useful suction.
Corded handvacs can run 7 amps, at 110v fifty times the power of battery powered units. DirtDevil seems to be a lower priced brand. The brands and models vary in style and attachments included, types of bags, bin capacity etc.
For example one Shark/Europro model has a small permanent washable cloth bag filter. The latest models have some of that cyclonic aerodynamics invented by Dyson (so long ago the patents may have expired, or everyone has licensed it -- but often with still a replaceable filter somewhere, compared to Dyson's permanent approach).

Great threat! Thanks for sharing your experience, guys!
Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
I use dyson v6, it's a great vacuum, best the original battery is not really great, then I find a replacement battery 3000mah for my v6, which let my dyson to back to life.
Re: Best hand-held or portable vacuum?
i have a dyson V10 and it's pretty good. just wish the battery lasted longer on full power.
