Children Apps and Learning

Post by a1robotrepair »

Living in beach vacation land gives one a new perspective on behaviors. Recently, I've noticed the children, typically under the age of 16, walking around oblivious to their surroundings, looking at their smart phones. While some may say this has been going on for some time, I'm talking about oblivious to the point they run into things, trip into ditches and walk directly into traffic. I asked my granddaughter what new "App" has their total attention? "Pokemon GO", she replied.
I then downloaded the app and went for my morning walk with it running. I can completely understand the behavior now after chasing one of the little virtual animals trying to catch it with my virtual pokeball. I walked right into the beach access stairway.
After we both returned home from a long hot humid brutal day of work, we went out after dark to catch Pokemon, She to show me how and I to hack the app. I kept it simple using input touch events and editing memory using Airterm.
I thought her how to change her settings in her phone to become the root user, use the input touch and edit the memory. She is now reading about html and Java, written a few simple button commands and put script instructions in for button touch.
Who knew Pokemon would get her interested in a new field? Three finger salute to NIANTIC.

Kudos to you teaching her how to do all that. Learning how to edit the memory and becoming interested in programming at such a young age, she's going to have bright future.

New behavior: people, not just children walking around with black eyes, bloody lips and,or scrapes and bruises while still chasing Pokemon and still oblivious. I think this one will surpass Angry Birds.

On one hand, it is great that technologies have been developed rapidly as they really ease our lives. On the other hand, we didn't have smartphones when we were kids, so we spent more time outdoors, communicated with our friends in real, not only online. I have two children. My son is 3,5 and he likes using my phone, but I try limiting time. It is better to go for a walk or play educational games together. Don't judge me and don't think that I'm against smartphones, I also play games, but in my opinion, modern children have some social problems because they started communicating mostly online and prefer playing online instead of doing it with friends like we did.
