Shark ION Robot 750

I have to start out by saying I received free IONs (prototype followed by production version) and was compensated (paid) for testing the IONs and providing feedback to Shark. This is my honest opinion and is not influenced by Shark.

I need to write a more detailed review but my impressions:

Positives:

• Quiet, especially on carpet were there is no clacking from the wheels hitting seams or grout lines. I actually slept while it was running on my bedroom carpet.
  Long battery life of about 2 hours.
  Does a good job of cleaning my 1000 sqft downstairs and usually finds the dock before the battery goes flat.
  Powerful suction.
  Two side brushes seem to help cleaning.
  Soft touch bumpers (ala Roomba) mean less bumping into things.
  Has scheduling and WiFi.
  Comes with a remote.
  Magnetic strips work well but are a bit old fashioned.
  External On/Off switch to preserve the battery when not used for long periods.

Negatives:

• Does not have advanced navigation. Works similar to my old Roomba Reds. But it does do a good job cleaning despite not being as advanced as Neatos and the newer Roombas.
  I need to try with updated software but the WiFi function was flaky. I kept losing connection. Didn't work with my guest network which requires a password entered after connecting (web browser).
  Side brushes get ratty looking and will probably need to be replaced.
  Has trouble with the molding between my hardwood floors and tile. My Roombas and Neato have issues as well but usually escape. Sometimes the ION gives up with an error code.
  Sometimes stops with an error code even though it is not trapped.
  Soft touch bumper leaves space uncleaned near detected objects.

Would I buy one for the $320 asking price I see online? Probably but the Botvac D3 is tempting for just a little more money. But a big plus for me (and my wife) is how quiet the Ion is. I only have ancient Roomba Reds and a Neato XV11 to compare to but the ION is quiet enough to run while humans are in the same room. Maybe the newer Roombas and Botvacs are just as quiet but I have not tried them.

I got frustrated with my ION stopping with a doom error sound. Maybe if it was connected to WiFi I may have been able to get an error message. After cleaning the bumpers and cliff sensors it would still randomly stop. Turns out one of the side brushes had a clump of dog hair stuck between two of the three brush sections. And the two side brushes rotate over two cliff sensors. Apparently the clump of dog hair convinced the Shark there was a cliff present. After removing the clump it ran error free.

My ancient Roomba Reds also have a side brush that rotates over a cliff sensor. Not sure why both companies did not try to avoid that. But then again has not been an issue with my Reds.

THANK YOU!!!! I was wondering why ours kept doing that. I also need to remember to turn it off with the switch more often. My 1 yo son loves to play with it so it often gets picked up off the charger and put out of reach. Sometimes it stays there for hours then later, just runs out of juice half way through the cycle.

Quick question. and this might just be a general robovac question. Is there anything I can do (short of painting) to stop the vac from slamming into the black baseboards in the kitchen? it's not too bad when it's feeling its way around but some times its running full speed and BAM! right into the baseboard.

And BTW, your review is pretty much spot on with our experience. The previous vac was an OLD (12 years) roomba and yes this one it MUCH quieter. And it does a great job too when we don't let it sit there all day turned on and not charging. lol

I think the only thing you can do is try padding the front of the ION. Mine does the same thing and I don't worry about it too much. Our baseboards are 15+ years old. If they were new I might be concerned.

My ION recently lit up a replace message above the clean button. Not sure what needs to be replaced. I may have to read the manual (gasp!) or hook up via WIFI.

My production model Shark has developed an issue which makes it spin in place and stop. Looks like the bumper is no longer springing all the way back. Time to take it apart and supply some pictures.

I received a number of Sharks for test and seem to be missing one. Maybe it swam off.

Still using the Shark proto. Works fine and my anti-robot wife uses it to clean our small porch which it seems well suited for rooms. One of these days I gotta fix the production unit. Grandson killed It

The Shark ION Robot 750 is a decent budget-friendly robot vacuum with app and voice control. It’s quiet and works well on hardwood and low-pile carpets but has random navigation and a small dustbin. Great for light daily cleaning, but not ideal if you need smart mapping or deep cleaning power.
