Roomba 780 turning off ?

Post by hsound »

Hi, I'm a new Roomba 780 happy user but I'm wondering why it doesn't completly turn off when fully charge while standing on it's base... The green light and the virtual blue buttons are always on. I have to undock it from it's charging base to turn it off completly. Is that normal?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my poor english (I'm from Belgium).

The Green LED under the Clean button will stay on when the external power supply is connected or when the Roomba is sitting on the homebase. The reason it is on is to indicate charging status. Once the Roomba is removed from the power source the charging status LED will go off but the battery inside the Roomba will begin to discharge due to internal circuits that still draw power. The 5 volt regulator, the IR receiver sensor, and MCU are all using up power. It is not good to leave the Roomba disconnected from a charging source unless you plan on not using the Roomba for an extended period. If so then remove the battery and store it in a cool place.

Thanks for your quick reply! So the Roomba is not so "eco" friendly...

I've never seen an ad placing the Roomba in the eco friendly group. It uses NiXX batteries and requires constant charging, probably less impact than an electric car though.

But it has been posted that a Neato still draws on its battery if the display is off.

Almost every modern piece of electronics gear will draw power unless you remove the power source.

Not sure about the Neato's current draw when undocked the Rommba draws around 10mA. I'm sure the Neato is similar. Your cable/satellite box and TV probably draw more.

Even your desktop or laptop draw power when "off". You would have to unplug the desktop or remove the laptop's battery to really shut them off.

So the roomba and neato are probably no worse than most items found in your home.

I know its an old thread, however as its one from google´s first hits I would like to share some "news" here. I recently ordered an iRobot OSMO (R700/800) [order number: 4320859 it costs around 6 Euro / 7 Dollar + shipping you can order that via the iRobot website]. This is a small electronic device which has the latest firmware on board. You plug that into the iRobot wait some time until the firmware update is done and then you remove that again. After the update my iRobot Roomba 780 no longer has the LED switched on when sits longer then 1-2 min on the charging station. If you press the middle button the first time the LEDs will come up again a 2nd press on the button will start the cleaning cycle. The LEDs will stay one when he is performing the cleaning.

This wasn´t the case before the update and I got used to put a paper on the LEDs during the night (as the iRobot is in my bedroom).

Hello,
