Slider Effect Measurement

A measurement of the effect on drag force on a Botvac on medium loop pile carpet. The slider is absolutely needed for the Botvac to operate on this carpet in its present condition, in a high humidity environment. The slider works very well and the Botvac navigates easily. Without the slider the Botvac moves noticeably slower, exhausts the battery twice as fast and will get stuck in some places with wheels spinning.

To measure the drag force approximately, a string is attached to the bottom of the wheels, covered in slick tape, and pulled with a postal scale. Of interest is the difference in drag measured with and without the slider, rather than the actual drag experienced with drive wheel rotation. Because the wheels sink into the carpet, the string cannot be attached to the wheel axle or sides of the Botvac, as then the forward resistance of the wheels tilts the unit forward pressing the front into the carpet. A powered measurement with wheels driven by the motors is difficult because attaching a string to the back to measure the traction pull also distorts the unit stance.

3/8 in. thick Botvac slider (1/4 in. XV models)

4 pounds (1.81kg) of force was observed needed to move the Botvac with the slider, and 4.25 pounds (4 lbs. 4 oz, 1.93kg) needed without the slider. The slider makes only a 6 per cent reduction in the drag forces. The carpet presents a very borderline condition which is nonetheless critical to navigation.

Hello!

I don't have so much knowledge about this slick carpet, so anyone can give me detail information about it.

Synthetic fiber medium pile carpet, some shag carpet. Some fibers even have wax material in them. It can depend on climate, humidity. Besides the slick property, the plush of deeper piles also presents drag on the robot.
The slick property can develop over a long period, so initial observations can be misleading.

Some robots have higher traction wheel treads, pointed tread blocks, more tacky material, and larger wheels on some models, such as Samsung. Measurements are not available for all brands.

The first Vorwerk models had a serious error in the wheels later corrected, making them out of hard plastic from furniture casters maybe.

There are two ways carpet resists travel by the robot vacuums. The obvious case is deep pile carpet which simply blocks movement like a car stuck in a corn field, with the bots sinking into the plush, not having large enough wheels. It has also been found that plush carpet can be slippery, depending on wear and possibly humidity in the environment (or dryness, not clear which). Part of the deep pile problem is the wheels do not get much of a grip on the plush depressed beneath the wheels, but the slippery problem can affect medium pile carpet as well. It has also been observed some carpets have lubricant-like chemicals in the yarn itself -- probably more the synthetic types, but no precise data available.

Thern - that is probably the most thorough and descriptive (if maybe a bit overly descriptive of a simple subject) post in all of the internet!

Sadly, you have missed the mark in understanding what is being discussed in this thread! It's to do with "slickness" on TOP of the carpet, not underneath it!

Are robot vacuum cleaners even efficient at cleaning carpets? Even if I have quite a strong vacuum cleaner (it lifts the rather heavy carpets when I reach the edges), I still have to brush said carpet quite brutally to get the cat hair, breadcrumbs and other little unpleasant things out of it.

No, robotic vacuums are not as good as an upright AC powered vacuum.

... but they are amazingly good! Bolstered by the fact that they can be set up to work regularly (daily), the nett effect can be "Yes, the carpets are just as clean"...
