Neato Dirtbin.. redesign (STL Available)

I've ony had my Neato for a few days, and I'm already having issues. First, the dirtbin gets blocked completely at the entrance before the bin is even 10% full, secondly, the filter is poorly designed, so, I got to work.

Using the Roomba 880 filter and a redesigned dirtbin, 3D printed of course.

That's why Dyson tests his 360 with the bin "pre-loaded with dirt" and can claim his cyclone method to be "the most powerful vacuum of any robot cleaner"... although in absolute "air-watt" terms it probably isn't.

Nice redesign though. Does it work/improve the situation, or is this just the first step of further development?

Currently 3D printing a prototype. I do expect more suction with less blockages tho. Best thing is, I've designed the bin to use Roomba's filters. The mod is a little extreme, but it fixes the issues the engineers left. Hopefully, the Neato should finally compete with my modded 530 (That has an 880 CHM and dirtbin).

Dyson and his preloaded filter testing. His best cyclone is only good to 0.5 micron. In other words it's just a bad filter. A HEPA collects 99.99% of everything below and above that size.

What you do is you design a robot that cleans it's own filter after every run, because it's a robot, Duh.

Nice bin mod though! The 880 filters are nice due to the fine mesh ahead of the hepa paper. Much easier to clean. I needed 6 of them to make one prototype filter for iiideg (for size reference)

Coming soon? I think you'll find Karcher already did it with the RC3000... about 14 years ago!

Yup, very very true (Karcher, Now discontinued) But only had a 4" wide cleaning path, no corner capability and it pulled the debris back through the way it came, thus wrapping hair around brush even more, and had a huge dock to perform this.

Still, it's another robot that is better than the Dyson.

Prototype 2, version 1.

Inital measurements off the dirtbin meant the final design didn't fit (The curves at the back of the dirtbin). Also, improved on the filter placement. Was thinking for a while, and will have to see the license for the program I'm using, to release the design on Thingiverse so people could 3D print the dirtbin..

If you want to measure the effect on air flow and lack a $5 anemometer, the vacuum fan current over USB is a useful proxy due to the fixed RPM control, especially in relative comparison (actually power, using the voltage drop under load). Current project on hold for a further couple of weeks whilst I rebuild my 3D printer. Tolerances are within 100 microns, and my 3D printer was failing. Dirt bin either was too small, or too big.

Once I've had the same problem, it was all about Neato sucked something gummy in my kitchen. And problem disappeared after I washed the dirtbin.

Quick update. I've since made some progress on this project, and I'm getting new prototypes printed.

Another update.

After printing another prototype, I now have very shocking results. My Neato picks up twice as much! Neato was ran until the dirtbin was absolutely full (dirt building up in the inlet from the brush).

New picture of the dirt been compressed. Dirt is getting through the pre filter and is pilling up on the pleats.. seems the Neato suction maybe too much for the pre filter, or I have dusty carpets, or the Neato never cleaned this well previously.

I noticed whilst cleaning, the Neato seems to suck up debris 1 inch from the front of its bumper..
