S9 moves, maps, brushes spin - but does not vacuum
S9 moves, maps, brushes spin - but does not vacuum
I just inherited an S9 from relative. Set it up as new. I also cleaned it and removed/inserted the battery.
It runs, does the mapping, spins the brushes, but does not vacuum. I have tried scheduling and just pressing the Clean button with the same results. When I put my hand to the exhaust I don't feel air coming out, so I suspect the suction is not on at all. Is this a defective unit or is there something else I can check?

The vacuum motor is not getting power or is defective.
There are metal contacts on the sides of the bin and in the bin holder of the Roomba to provide this power.
Make sure all 4 (2 on bin, 2 on Roomba) are clean.
Should that fail to fix it, order a replacement bin from iRobot.

Thanks for you reply!
I looked at the bin and could not find the metal contacts on any side, inside or out, or in the well where the bin goes. The closest I found was four contacts where the lid comes down, and I suspect the Roomba would return an error if those were not registering.
I also reseated the 4 pin molex type connector and that didn't work either.
I have since removed the motor and examined it and there aren't any visible defects or debris stuck inside.
I suspect I have a defect.

On my 980 the bin contacts are on the top front sides, about 1/4 in tall and 1/2 in long. Bright shinny metal.
The metal under the lid are not electric contacts. They are a latch to prevent closing the lid if the filter is not installed. Then if the lid can't close the bin can't be installed in the Roomba.

Hello!
Can you get a map? Reset and have vacuum without mapping.

I have the older 980, which does not map.denalope wrote:Hello!

I was only commenting on how power gets through the bin to the vacuum motor, which seemed to be your only problem. It should be the same on the newer S9.

I can get a map and have let it do a scheduled vacuum with no success in actually vacuuming.denalope wrote:Hello!

But even when I press Clean, which should start an ad-hoc run, it does not vacuum. When I put my hand behind the roomba there is no air coming out, and the usual vacuuming noises are missing. I just hear the wheels and rollers.

Hello,
I already changed the engine, the basket and it didn't solve the problem.

Would changing these sensors help?

Install the app , it should give an error if it does not vacuum . you will better understand the problem
