LG Hom-Bot is available in the US!!

Post by Fraggboy »

Hello guys. Back on a regular PC so I can actually write something. Just got some video of the Hom-Bot, as well as 2.0.

As you know, 2.0 is not available yet. We have been told that it will be avaiable later on this year. No price is set for it also.

But, the Hom-Bot IS available in the US.

Amazon has it going for $719.10. Pretty steep price, but how will it clean on carpet, better yet, pick up pet hair/debris.

I am hoping I can get a review unit here shortly to put it through the paces of my hazardous home. I have a cat and a dog which shed and can be detrimental on gears and such. Thus why I don't run certain robotic vacuums in my home.

Anyways, here is Amazon's link: LG Hom-Bot Red Vacuum Cleaning Robot

There are other dealers that carry it as well.

Looks very well designed from the videos - but no real scheduler? What were they thinking!

Craig and myself have emailed LG's PR person we met at CES. He said he would provide us a unit for review.

No word yet.

EDIT: I emailed him again. I will keep this thread updated if I hear back from him.

I dont know about other parts of Europe but i believe u can find it in France. U should be able to find out more from this reviewer: http://translate.google.com/translate?s ... r1129rb%2F

Alternatively, u can buy the Korean domestic model from any of the Korean ebay retailer. They can ship the bot direct to u from Korea.

I was unable to find any retailers in the united states. Ordered one on ebay from a seller with 99.9% positive feedback. Cross my fingers! Will speak to me in korean, but the buttons are said to be intuitive. Seems like australia has some english speaking versions, but it may be hard to find someone willing to ship them here.

No worries, its really easy to operate. The Korean voice isnt really an issue since u dont require the voice feedback to operate the bot. I believe the Ebay seller will provide u with an English manual anyhow.

Okay so here's the deal with this guy:

I like the robot... But anyone ordering one should know a few things about it.

First, and this has been covered in a more comprehensive review, the robot often turns a little tight and rubs against objects. The anti collision system is very good with a few exceptions. It won't guard against any 90 degree corner that isn't rounded. So sharp points will often result in a relatively soft ( but still damaging bump). Also, while they tout a 14 degree upward slant to the sensor, the robot still went under the dresser that it barely clears on one side and then ( once blind in the dark) tries to get out where it doesn't clear. I believe there was even some scraping on the first entrance. So with all robots this one not being any exception, the furniture has to be compatible.

Now on to the single biggest problem I see.. I have some hillbilly baseboards in my place... I think they are just 1x2 boards nailed to the wall and painted.. anyway. The edge following sensors clearly shoot right over the top of the baseboard... Resulting in, a robot that is trying to get an inch closer to the wall than it can. It basically starts to follow and scrapes its way down the baseboard eventually turning sideways a little then its sensors figure out what is going on and spins 90 degrees and loops back into the wall to to take another stab at it. No bueno. In other parts of the house the trim is closer to 1x3.. this is caught by the sensor and it follows perfectly. So I cut a roomba bumper extender (amazon) in fourths and put a piece on both sides toward the bottom adjacent to the rubber strip that is on the front of the robot. This alleviates nearly all scraping that was occurring throughout the house and allows the robot to slide along the trim/baseboard that is a combination of too short and too fat. It isn't pretty but it works. If it were my place I would rip out the hillbilly baseboards and put something there that is smaller and contoured.

The robot is very thorough, cleans the entire house, sometimes it charges and goes back after it. The room to room is fantastic, and when this thing commutes around the house it does so very quickly and competently.

The construction quality is much tighter than the 500 series roomba. Especially the dust bin and brushes. My girlfriend never asks me to shut it off due to noise.

The microfiber pad is no good. Doesnt seem to do much and makes the robot more apt to get stuck. Plus it can't climb anything with it on, not even tiny thresholds. See iclebo arte for one better at climbing.
So the robot cleans very well, I think it is on par with roomba, having an advantage in dust and a disadvantage on slightly smaller heavier objects due to a single brush rather than counter rotating ones. Everything it really needs is within itself or the charging base, no walls or lighthouses or other garbage.

Thank you for the update of the Hom-Bot.

Overall, it sounds like it does a very good job, minus the few quirks that it has. Every robotic vacuum cleaner has them. It just matters which ones we can tolerate. ;)
