My quest for a cheap LCD for Neato XV!

This is the connector attached to the board.


And this is the LCD screen ribbon.


The ribbon was inserted into the connector with the golden pads touching the white part.

On a side note, is there a way of fixing/working around the /Res pad issue? The wire that WAS connected to it came loose and now there is virtually nothing left to solder it back to.

As far as the res pad is concerned, you can scrape off the coating on the etch that leads to the resistor and solder it there. You could also solder it to the side of the resistor labeled R10.

That's weird... the pictures were showing for me before, but no longer. Maybe the OP deleted the pictures from where they were hosted?

Great, it worked.

So, is my connection right? The golden part of the LCD ribbon faces the white part of the SIF connector, right?

PS; Scraping above the /Res pad worked. I have a better place to solder that wire now.

Quick update... IT WORKS!!!



The problem was indeed the loose /RES wire.

That connector looks like it is designed for downward facing contacts (towards the board).
If this is so then you will have to flip/mirror the connections, like my MkII.
jpccusa's board is for upward facing contacts.

Assuming you still align the ribbon to pin 1 on the ZIF connector then pin 31 moves to pin 1, pin 30 moves to 2, etc.
The unused V0 would end up being on pin 31.

Juts few remarks based on my experience repeating this:

1) If you decide to proceed with LCD like it described (to fix mirroring) then you may leave original back light LED. In my case it was stayed on pcb while i was removing broken LCD and I decide to solder them out later one, but finally find out that its good to leave them as well as original plastic thing that was under the original LCD.

2) If you decide to proceed WITHOUT switching neato off (I was not sure in my result and decide to keep my current schedule in memory, If it wiped - then its almost impossible to setup it again without LCD) then you need to know that after connecting - you need to press buttons (In my case it was: start working, pause, stop) to see images on LCD, other wise it will stay blank (looks like each time you start/stop it reinitialize LCD)

3) If it your first time soldering 0.5mm (like it was for me) order two connectors!!! And ensure that you understand soldering techniques It was good that I order two of them like it was reccomended here.

Excellent, another XV saved!

Yes, retaining the original backlight is a great idea. I removed the broken LCD as a complete unit because I had no idea at the time that I would end up having to pull the backlight off!

Performing this (or any) repair with the power still on is very risky, it is never advisable to work on a circuit whilst it is powered! It would only take something like a dropped screw on the circuitry to blow it.

Hi, I had bought the same adaptator as oxdbxo and done the same soldering as in the visual representation above. And my display still not showing anything !
any piece of advice ?

Get a multimeter and check that there are no short circuits between any of your wires. It looks like there may be a short here, circled in red...

Be sure to remove all solder spikes and splatters.

I have checked every solder and everything is good so far (no short circuits). I start thinking my lcd is not working. I'm gonna order a new one soon to test it.
